The Redside Foundation

The Redside Foundation Supporting the health and strength of the professional outdoor guiding community. Why the name?

Inspiration for the Redside Foundation

The Redside Foundation was created (2010) in loving memory of longtime Idaho River Guide Telly Evans (1974-2010). Telly was a dedicated Middle Fork of the Salmon guide, a legendary interpreter of the wilderness, and a compassionate friend to all. Sadly, behind his generous smile and unyielding passion, Telly hid a pain that would eventually steal him from t

he river and friends he loved. The Redside Foundation strives to foster his spirit in others by protecting the health and wellbeing of his guiding family. There are three distinct reasons we chose the name “Redside” for this Foundation: 1) Redside is an infamous rapid on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River – one of Telly’s favorites despite the nervousness it generates, 2) Redside conjures up images of the majestic native sockeye salmon on its life fulfilling journey to the heart of central Idaho, and 3) no one will ever forget Telly’s enormous red beard and token chops.

We're looking forward to connecting with all the Stanley area guides attending the clinics on June 5th.

There is just ONE spot left for the the First Aid and CPR certification course. Its just $42.00 and will happen at Mountain Village from 10 am -12 noon.

If you are working with horses (or want to in the future), you don't want to miss the Backcountry First Aid for Horses clinic with Dr. Shane Baird. He will share valuable skills for dealing with common issues that can become devastating in the backcountry, such as colic, eye issues, and lacerations. You will also learn how to build a horse-specific first aid. It starts at 2 pm at the Redfish Corrals.

Huge thanks to for helping to make this happen!

We will be there to support all the guides going into their summer season, answer any questions about how we support and strengthen the guiding community, and will have some cool merch for sale.

50 years in whitewater deserves more than a quick cheers. 🌊

Join us June 5 at across from Fisherman’s Bridge as we celebrate Carol Gardner and the incredible impact she has had on the river community over the last five decades.

What started as a passion for rivers has helped shape generations of guides, mentorship, and opportunities for women across the whitewater world. That spirit is exactly why WWoW and The Redside Foundation are coming together for this event. 💜

We’re raising support for guide health, women in whitewater, and a stronger global river community through music, food, drinks, giveaways, and one very good excuse to spend an evening with river people.

Men are 4x more likely to die by su***de than women.

Read that again.

This weekend spans Mental Health Awareness Month and Men's Mental Health Awareness Month - a moment to confront what too many men face in silence: depression that looks like anger, risky behavior, or substance abuse; or anxiety masked as irritability; or simply pain hidden behind "I'm fine."

In guiding - where across all disciplines roughly 90% of us are men - the pressure to be tough runs deep. Handle things. Push through tough moments. Don't show weakness. Stay stoic.

But that silence can be dangerous. Many of us have been taught that admitting struggle makes us less of a man. It doesn't. It makes you human. Redside has been working to change that for years, but the sentiment still lingers.

How can you help the men on your crew?
Start a conversation: A simple conversation can spark transformation.
Share resources: Help normalize seeking help by sharing information about mental health support services, like our Guide Helpline. Let others know support is available and that it works.
Create safe spaces: Sometimes, just knowing it’s OK to talk makes all the difference.

If you're feeling off - angry for no reason, isolating more than usual, using substances to cope, taking bigger risks - that might be depression talking. And it deserves attention. We're here for you. No judgment. Just support from people who understand guide life.

Call or text our Guide Helpline: 208-740-1192 to speak with a fully licensed therapist who can connect you with a fully licensed counselor who truly understand the guide lifestyle for up to 8 sessions . And if you are in immediate crisis please call or text 988.

Thursday, June 18 at Pint Night, we’re hosting the Redside Foundation. 6 to 8 PM.
Redside supports the health and strength of the professional guiding community across Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and Colorado. The foundation was created in memory of Telly Evans, a longtime Idaho river guide who passed in 2010.

Their 24/7 Guide Helpline connects any guide to a licensed therapist who understands the work and the lifestyle. Typically eight confidential sessions at no cost. Since 2014, Redside has supported more than 23,000 counseling sessions. They also run financial coaching, professional development grants, and scholarships.

The evening will include a short film, an overview of resources, and time to talk with the people doing the work. Open to any guide or outfitter in the Bighorn Basin, anyone who works alongside them, and anyone who wants to understand what the community needs.

Every Thursday at Pint Night, we offer complimentary beer or non-alcoholic beverages to anyone with a Sunlight pint glass. Don’t have one yet? You can purchase a limited-edition glass at the event. 100% of proceeds go directly to one of our five local nonprofit partners that get kids outside.

Losing a loved one to su***de is a pain like no other, and the grief is often complicated and unique. To the survivors and loved ones carrying this heavy burden: please be patient with your healing and know that it is okay to ask for help. You are not alone on this journey.

If you’re struggling, please know we are here for you. Healing does not erase the loss; it transforms how we carry it. The road for su***de loss survivors can feel dark, but you don’t have to walk it in the shadows. As you navigate complex feelings, there is support available. It's important to keep in mind that your feelings are valid, and there is no timeline for grief. Please be gentle with your heart.

If you need support from us, please reach out to the Guide Helpline: 208-740-1192. If you are in immediate distress, please call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, or text HOME to 741741 to connect with the Crisis Text Line.

You matter, and help is available.

This time of year often carries a paradox: longer, brighter days, landscapes greening up and full of blooms, and the pressure to be 'summer-ready' all paired with transition, and deeper unsettled feelings. Several factors contribute to spring-related mental health shifts:

1. Circadian rhythm disruption: Changes in daylight affect sleep-wake cycles, which are closely tied to mood regulation.
2. Hormonal fluctuations: Light exposure influences serotonin and melatonin levels, both of which impact emotional stability.
3. Increased stimulation: More social activity, noise, and environmental change can feel overwhelming to the nervous system.
4. Psychological expectations: The belief that you should feel better can intensify distress when you don’t.

For our guides stepping into the summer season, the emotional shifts can feel overwhelming. Recognize that transition is inherently imperfect: it’s a signal that you’re growing, not failing.

Ground yourself with a simple routine, give yourself permission to take some time for yourself, and lean on the support of your network. Your resilience isn’t built in a single moment of certainty; it’s built in the daily acts of self-care, connection, and honest reflection.

If spring feels heavy, know you’re not alone. We are here for you. If you are struggling and need support, you can call or text the Guide Helpline: 208-740-1192. We've got your back.

It's World Meditation Day!

What a great reminder of the importance of taking time each day to cultivate a practice that is an act of self-compassion - ultimately fueling resilience and joy.

The benefit isn’t just personal well-being; it’s stronger leadership, steadier decision-making, and a more loving, connected network.

Start with five minutes today: breathe, notice, and choose kindness toward yourself. Your impact grows from there.
