Why should Idahoans be concerned about nuclear waste transportation and storage issues?

In July, Governor Little signed an MOU with Department of Energy (DOE) for a "Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus" in Idaho.

According to Marla Morales at DOE's Office of Spent Nuclear Fuel and High-level Waste Disposition, nuclear waste "is the main course."

Data centers, nuclear reactors, are "appetizers."

In fact, if a state wants a campus, it must be responsible for "ultimate disposition," aka final storage.

Some 100,000 metric tons of spent nuclear waste is sitting at nuclear reactor sites, 90% of which are in the eastern half of the country.

While Idaho raises it's hand to receive thousands of metric tons of radioactive waste from out-of-state to reprocess and store, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is making the whole industry less safe for workers and communities.

Apparently keeping workers safe is cutting into industry profits.

DOE and the state promises jobs at their "Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus" dump, but at what cost?

No thanks. We want safe, healthy jobs for our families and for Idaho.

💡West Virginia's governor finally heard the Department of Energy's words.

🤑At least the Department of Energy is being honest, even if they use fancy lingo to make their new dump scheme sound like a good deal.

🙉I mean, we'd be backwards, or luddites, if we don't want a "nuclear lifecycle innovation campus," right?

Wrong❗

☢No matter how "innovative" or "advanced" the front end is, we will always have nuclear waste.

⚠Reprocessing and pyroprocessing do NOT solve the need for a permanent repository.

Former Republican Governor, Phil Batt, “predicted that Little would change his nuclear waste agreement as soon as he died. As predicted, Little did amend the agreement shortly after Batt’s death in 2023. Now, if Little accepts the Trump administration’s quid pro quo deal, the Batt Agreement will be shredded for all intents and purposes.” A deal that stopped the import of nuclear waste into Idaho.
