The end of the lazy summer is coming to an end for pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) in the West. In August, these mammals —known as the fastest land mammal in the Americas—transition into a livelier routine where adult bucks begin sizing each other up and establishing territories. During this livelier, pre rut behavior, it is not uncommon to hear grunting and witness sparring that represents a segway into their breeding season.

Former U.S. Senator Bill Frist, M.D, global board chair of The Nature Conservancy, and his wife Tracy spent six days on Idaho's Middle Fork of the Salmon River. 🐟 Guided by Sammy Matsaw Jr, a Shoshone-Bannock Tribal member and TNC's Columbia Basin Salmon Program Director, they explored the canyon’s ecological complexity, Indigenous history and the cultural significance of salmon.

A single moment — watching five Chinook salmon in Loon Creek — represented the tension between intact high‑elevation habitat and the increasingly difficult migration these fish face. Frist’s takeaway: stewardship requires honest evaluation of aging infrastructure, and comprehensive solutions — replacement clean energy, transportation alternatives, Tribal leadership and community investment — before action is taken. The goal is a Northwest capable of supporting abundant salmon, reliable clean energy and resilient communities. The journey home for these fish should be possible again at scale.

Did it suddenly get a little quieter around here? 🎶🐦 This time of year, songbird activity across the West begins to shift from the sounds of breeding and nesting to a quieter preparation for long distance travel required for fall migration. Birds like the Wilson's warbler (Candellina pusilla), pictured here, are wrapping up their breeding season in higher mountain areas before relocating to Mexico and Central America.
