In the spirit of the , let's talk about bats! 🦇 Idaho is home to 14 native bat species. This time of year, some of the bats migrate to southern locations. However, as overnight temperatures drop and insects disappear, most resident species stay put to hibernate during the winter months. 🦇 Unlike the large-group cave hibernation observed in the eastern part of the country, Idaho bats typically hibernate alone or in small groups inside of caves, abandoned mines or cliff rock crevices. The Science for Nature and People Partnership (SNAPP) is recruiting a research fellow with a strong background in environmental social science and experience in working with diverse partners on energy and/or rangeland issues. The is the perfect time to celebrate the common raven (Corvus corax). 🐦‍⬛ In Idaho, these native, permanent residents can be spoted this time of year across the state's mountains, sagebrush deserts, forests and even some urban areas. Late summer and early autumn mark the peak number of occupied communal roosts, which likely form in order to ward off cooling temperatures, solidify social networks and even communicate about food sources with the changing seasons.

Fences can block the path of wildlife from migrating across broad ranges required for their life cycles. They can also entangle and injure animals as they try to cross fence lines. 🦌 These are reasons why The Nature Conservancy collaborates with local groups to restore critical migration corridors for elk, mule deer, pronghorn and other animals by adjusting or removing obsolete and dangerous wire fencing in key areas of our western states. Thanks for supporting efforts like these that protect our iconic wildlife.

This time of year, these ancient birds can be spotted throughout our region during their migration to wintering grounds in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California and Mexico after a busy summer breeding and raising chicks.
