“(Aid) is very important, especially here in Idaho,” Santiago said of supply distributions. “In other states like Oregon and Washington, there are stricter regulations when it comes to workers getting breaks. But here in Idaho, there is not, and we want to support farmworkers as much as possible.”

Among the main threats facing farmworkers over the summer months is smoke and heat, Guerrero said, which in addition to long workdays, often insufficient pay and out-of-pocket expenses for basic gear can make work dangerous.

Wildfire smoke, like that lingering across much of Idaho, can create a myriad of health conditions from headaches, nausea and respiratory tract irritation, to more long-lasting problems like worsened asthma, according to the EPA.”

The 2026 J.J. Saldaña Heat and Smoke Relief Fund is supported through community donations, which can be either monetary or supplies such as drinks, protective gear and shade and cooling items. It also pays tribute to the late Idaho Latino leader J.J. Saldaña, who worked for the Idaho Commission on Hispanic Affairs for more than 20 years before his death in September 2023.

“We’re just trying to alleviate the conditions that they’re facing because many times they have to purchase these items out of their pockets, and we also know that the wages in Idaho can be really low for farmworkers,” Guerrero said.

Many people don’t know how common it is for Idaho farmworkers to work in Oregon and vice versa Oregon farmworkers crossing into Idaho. There’s a noticeable difference in how they are treated and protected in each state. We are thankful for IORC members like Eddie dedicating their time and years to this effort of getting emergency aid to our frontline communities, those who feed us, farmworkers.

“We’ve seen people get hurt. We’ve seen people get exposures, cancers, a lot of these things, so this is where it really hits home for me and giving back to the community,” he said.

Their efforts came as wildfires continued to burn more than 1 million acres of Oregon. Interstate 84 was closed in both directions between Baker City and Ontario Monday morning, as the Fox Fire in Baker County burned more than 43,000 acres with no containment. The City of Huntington near the Snake River was issued a Level 3 “GO NOW” evacuation order.
Ontario, a hub for interstate commerce and the largest city connecting Oregon and Idaho, has been blanketed with wildfire smoke, with conditions reaching the “very unhealthy” category, which could cause serious health problems for all groups of people.
Melendrez said multiple organizations across the Oregon-Idaho border are working together to adequately help farmworkers cope with worsening heat and smoke summer after summer. This includes the Oregon Food Bank, the Idaho Organization of Resource Councils and the Ontario Rapid Response Team, he said.

The Idaho Organization of Resource Councils is collecting donations and essential supplies for the 6th Annual JJ Saldaña Heat & Smoke Relief Fund for Idaho Farmworkers in collaboration with our community partners.

Farmworkers continue working through dangerous conditions, including 100°+ temperatures, wildfire smoke, and pesticide exposure. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, farmworkers are 35 times more likely to die from heat-related illness than workers in other industries.

Your support helps provide life-saving essentials like:

In 90 degree weather la Michoacana took a break to thank our organization for thinking of our farmworkers. Many of our farmworkers in Idaho are located in rural parts caring for the food we get to enjoy during the holidays.
This work is difficult to perform but many of our farmworkers enjoy tending to the land. Unfortunately there are many stressors they face like the weather but also fearing for the safety of their loved ones during these times. Our farm workers deserve respect and protection.

Our farmworkers are working in the fields planting, weeding, and harvesting the food that feeds our communities while working through these extreme conditions. They need our support now.

We went out to the fields last week to ask our local farmworkers some important questions. We asked “Why is important for our community to support farmworkers”?

Idaho farmworkers are facing dangerous heat and wildfire smoke right now. The people who harvest our food are working long hours in extreme conditions, and without adequate protection, heat illness can become life-threatening.

We’re crowdfunding for the 2026 JJ Saldaña Heat & Smoke Relief Fund to help provide water, electrolytes, bandannas, and shade canopies to farmworkers across Idaho this summer.
