Final 2026 Trout Camp recap post – Thank you!

Programs like this are possible because volunteers give their time, instructors share decades of experience, supporters invest in the next generation, and families trust us with an unforgettable week.

Together, we helped young people discover fly fishing, conservation, stewardship, teamwork, and friendships that will last long after camp is over.

Yes, our campers caught trout. Lots of them. But the biggest successes weren't measured in fish.

They were measured in first casts, growing confidence, cheering on new friends, learning how to safely handle and release fish, and seeing campers realize they could do something they never thought possible.

Every trout was released to fight another day, and every camper left with a deeper appreciation for the rivers and fish they now help protect.

That's a win every time.

Every great catch starts with someone willing to teach.
Throughout the week, campers worked side-by-side with experienced volunteer fly anglers learning everything from roll casting and mending to safe fish handling and Tenkara. They practiced on the casting field, competed in friendly casting games, and even tied flies back at camp.
One-on-one instruction is what makes Trout Camp special. Every cast, every knot, every fish becomes a chance to build confidence.
Our volunteers don't just teach fly fishing – they mentor, encourage, and inspire the next generation of anglers and conservationists.
Thank you to every instructor and volunteer who shared your knowledge, patience, and passion.

A great week at Trout Camp is built on more than fishing.

Our campers shared six-person tents with new friends, helped wash dishes after every meal, learned about recycling and waste reduction, and practiced Leave No Trace principles that they'll carry into every outdoor adventure.

By the end of the week, they weren't just better anglers – they were better teammates.

Watching kids encourage each other, solve problems together, and take pride in caring for camp is one of our favorite parts of the week.

The friendships formed around a campsite can last just as long as the memories made on the water.

2026 Trout Camp asked . . . what do trout eat?

That's one of the first questions our campers set out to answer.

Armed with lookie buckets, seines, tubs, and plenty of curiosity, our 2026 Trout Camp campers explored the Boise River to discover the incredible world of aquatic insects. They also spent time at the MK Nature Center learning how insects, fish, clean water, and healthy rivers are all connected.

Throughout a week at camp they also spotted dragonflies, toads, deer, and countless tiny creatures that most people never notice, but every fly angler should.

Before they ever tied on a fly, our campers learned that great fishing begins with understanding and caring for the ecosystem that makes it possible.

Because Trout Camp isn't just about catching fish. It's about learning to see the river differently.

RETHINKING BAMBOO FLY RODS

Chapter Meeting - May 6

Idaho Fish and Game Headquarters

6:15 Social – 7:00 Program

Trevor Sheehan, of Elevate Fly Fishing, will talk about modern bamboo fly rods and the path that led him into building them. His work focuses on designing bamboo rods that fish very differently than most anglers expect, with an emphasis on performance and real-world use on the water.
In this presentation, you’ll learn:

•How bamboo rods perform on the water
How modern bamboo fishes at typical trout distances, where it excels, and where it has limitations.

•How bamboo compares to graphite and fiberglass
Differences in casting, recovery, and overall performance.

•What makes modern bamboo different from traditional rods
How contemporary tapers and designs have changed the way bamboo rods fish.

•What goes into building a bamboo fly rod
A behind-the-scenes look at the process, from raw material to finished rod, and the level of precision involved.

Trevor will have rods on hand to handle, giving everyone a chance to see and feel the difference for themselves. Those interested, will be able try out the rods at the park adjacent to IDFG.
