Heading back to school (even college) can bring a range of emotions and they're all okay.

You can be excited... and nervous.
Confident... and unsure.
Ready for school... and wishing summer lasted longer.

More than one feeling can be true at the same time.
Give yourself permission to experience this season without feeling like you have to "have it all together."

As a new school year begins, remember that success isn't measured only by grades. Supporting mental wellness can help students build confidence, manage stress, and enjoy learning.

A few ideas to try:
๐ŸŒฟ Build healthy routines
๐Ÿƒ Stay physically active
๐Ÿง˜ Practice mindfulness or deep breathing
๐Ÿ“ Write thoughts in a journal
๐Ÿ‘ฅ Join a club or activity
โค๏ธ Reach out to a trusted adult when life feels overwhelming

No one needs to do everything at once.
Sometimes one small change can make a meaningful impact.

Small Practice: Create a consistent routine.

Returning to school often means returning to schedules.
A predictable routine can help reduce stress, improve sleep, and make busy days feel more manageable.
Try choosing just one routine to focus on this week:
โ€ข Pack your backpack the night before.
โ€ข Set a consistent bedtime.
โ€ข Eat breakfast before school.
โ€ข Spend five minutes planning tomorrow.

Small changes. Meaningful impact.

Small Practices That Support Wellbeing:

๐Ÿšถ Walking a Labyrinth

Sometimes the journey itself helps us find clarity.

A labyrinth is a winding walking path designed for reflection and mindfulness. Unlike a maze, there are no wrong turns or dead endsโ€”just one continuous path that leads to the center and back out again.

Walking a labyrinth can be a peaceful way to slow down, reduce stress, and reconnect with yourself.

If you're in the Boise area, you can visit:

โ€ข St. Luke's Boise Regional Medical Center โ€“ 190 E. Bannock St., Boise (free, open to the public, wheelchair accessible)
โ€ข Julius M. Kleiner Memorial Park โ€“ Meridian (free during park hours)
โ€ข Idaho Botanical Garden โ€“ Boise (admission required)

Sometimes the simple act of walking with intention is enough to help quiet a busy mind.

Small Practices That Support Wellbeing:

๐Ÿง  A Simple Way to Reset

Feeling overwhelmed? Try grounding yourself in the present moment.

Stress often pulls our minds toward what's already happened or what might happen next. Mindfulness helps bring us back to what's happening right now.

One simple exercise is the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique:

๐Ÿ‘€ 5 things you can see
๐Ÿคฒ 4 things you can feel
๐Ÿ‘‚ 3 things you can hear
๐Ÿ‘ƒ 2 things you can smell
๐Ÿ‘… 1 thing you can taste

Sometimes just a few mindful minutes can help create a sense of calm and clarity.

(And yes...after you finish reading this, it might be a good time to put the phone down for a few minutes. ๐Ÿ˜Š)

Can you believe we're talking about school? ๐Ÿ™‚The start of a new school year can bring excitement, anticipation...and stress.
Students may be looking forward to seeing friends while also wondering:
๐Ÿ“š Will my classes be harder?
๐Ÿ‘ฅ Will I fit in?
๐ŸŽ’ Will I make new friends?
๐Ÿ“ Can I keep up?
Those feelings are normal. Mental wellness isn't about feeling happy all the time, it's about developing healthy ways to manage challenges, build resilience, and ask for support when it's needed.
As families prepare for a new school year, remember that caring for emotional wellbeing is just as important as buying school supplies.

Practicing mindfulness is a great way to manage stress and burnout. Mindfulness can be created by getting off of devices (after you read this of course ๐Ÿ˜Š), sitting quietly for a few minutes, breathing deeply, and journaling. Hereโ€™s a quick mindfulness exercise that helps anchor yourself in the present moment. Itโ€™s called the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding technique โ€“ name:

5 things you can see,
4 things you can feel,
3 you can hear,
2 you can smell, and
1 you can taste.

Small changes, practiced consistently, can have a meaningful impact on our wellbeing.
