THE EXORCIST with Father Vance

One screening wasn’t enough. Father Vance is an ordained exorcist. He has done this work, in rooms, with the door shut. After the film he takes your questions, and the answers are not the ones you’d think. Last time, people were still talking in the lobby an hour after the credits.

The Exorcist, with Q&A by Ordained Catholic Exorcist, Father Vance — Friday, Oct 23. Screening begins at 7:00pm.

When the film ends he sits down with us and takes your questions, and his answers are not the ones you’ve rehearsed. Friedkin made a picture about a girl. The Lost Boys Curated by Grace

Joel Schumacher took a script about grade-school vampires and turned it into the coolest movie of 1987. Thomas Newman scored it. The oiled saxophone man has a name (Tim Cappello) and he still tours. Santa Carla forever.

Stop-motion is twenty-four handmade lies a second, every one moved by a person’s hand, and Lars is here to talk about how it’s actually done. Sketchbooks open, drinks in hand. Join us for an Animated Drink & Draw with celebrated animator Lars C. Larsen. Followed screening of Kubo and the Two Strings.

For the arrival of Wildwood, we’ve asked our in-house animation professional Lars C. Larsen (who worked on the film) to host a casual craft night and talk about the oldest trick in the business: making a thing that was never alive appear to breathe. Twenty-four frames a second, each one moved by hand.

Art supplies will be provided. Skill optional.

Wonder mandatory.

Each ticket comes with a glass of b**r or wine.

Red rooms, vamps, and a chainsaw.

Hereditary
Ari Aster's first feature, and he built that dollhouse conceit into the camera language so completely that you're never sure whether you're watching people or miniatures. Toni Collette's dinner-table monologue should have won everything. Colin Stetson's score was played on a bass saxophone he mic'd from the inside. It plays loud here.

Twin Peaks
Season 2: Ep 1 & 2. The 90 minute premiere by David Lynch. The cliffhanger reveal. The coffee remains damn good.

Evil Dead 2
Raimi bolted the camera to a 2x4 and had two crew members run with it. He pelted Bruce Campbell with so much fake blood, milk, and coffee creamer that Campbell's on-set nickname became a legal liability. Peter Deming shot it, went on to shoot Mulholland Drive. Still the gold standard for splatstick. Groovy.

PARENTS
A forgotten little nightmare from the suburban-horror canon. Dinner with Mom and Dad has never been more unsettling. For the cult movie archaeologists.

SECRET CINEMA
A classic horror of the 60s. Trust the programmer.

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN
Hoyte van Hoytema shot Swedish snow like it's a supporting character. Tomas Alfredson cast two kids who had never acted and let their awkwardness carry the whole film. The pool scene is one long, patient, devastating shot. Tender and absolutely brutal.

Six flicks. Six very different flavors of darkness.
