You probably know this team, and that's no accident!
If you've been in the Veteran Business community for long, you likely know Kerry Greenwald and the crew at Creekside Mortgage.
πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸžοΈ
But what's the backstory behind the team, and how did this successful business come to be?
🏑
Like so many entrepreneurs, Kerry didn't love the academic parts of his school day, and signed up for service at an early age. But over-achieving often shows up early, and Kerry utilized the bridge between his jr and senior year for basic training!
πŸ’ͺ
What was supposed to be a joint effort with friends turned into a character building solo experience, so what does a future mortgage broker decide to do?
Run the heavy equipment!
🚜
But after his time in the service ended, Kerry found the civilian version of his job wasn't joy giving, and went into lending.
πŸ’Έ
And that's it, right?
πŸ€”
No Veteran Entrepreneur backstory to date doesn't have its hills and valleys. And Kerry's story is no different!
The mortgage industry is nothing if not dramatic, and is the background music to Creekside Mortgage.
Early on, Kerry learned that this was no set it and forget it, or build it and they will come, situation.

Lessons learned in business:
1: You better get up and do the work early, and every day. Don't start at 10:00 am.
2. If something is working for you, don't tell everyone about it, keep building it!
3. Don't look month to month, look at your situation over the course of a year.
4. There's often competition, but especially when there's not, gamify your mindset, challenge yourself!
5. The goal is to serve, not just sell!
6. Only do, and offer things that you love and believe in. Kerry's dad's wisdom: "Do you believe in what THEY are doing? If NOT, don't do it."
Because of this, Kerry left what he thought was the high point of his career to start Creekside Mortgage!
7. "The trick to being in business, is figuring out how to STAY in business."
8. Every turn of events that got him to where he is today, was precipitated by a loss, a flop, or a downturn.
9. If you have a dream or a vision, don't wait, do it! And be willing to fail.
10. Don't let perfection be the enemy of good.
11. Surround yourself with people who can accell in areas you can't.
πŸ“
And what does being a Veteran, and serving Veterans and their families mean to Kerry?
"It means everything."
With over 8,000 loans to date in two states, Kerry and his team strive to change perceptions about VA loans, and Veterans. Closing in weeks instead of months, with a better rate, and a better understanding of what's possible and available puts a smile on their faces.
☝️
Being local, and having the ability to counsel, coach, and include Veterans in the community is a part of the mission, and the business goal is to continue to do it right, and to continue enjoy doing it!

Have you ever seen or heard the phrase, "Build in silence...?"

This statement is usually superimposed over an image of a wolf or a lion, or some fictional character, and while that might work well for wolves, lions and fictional characters, it won't serve you or your business well here in the real world!

Instead of doing that, DO THIS!

And then get the support, resources and help you need here:

Another great opportunity from RECON Overland & Off Road to help out the communities around us experiencing these fires!

Fire season is hitting closer to home this year.

We believe community is about showing up when our neighbors need us most.

Many families, first responders, and communities across Idaho are feeling the impact of this fire season. While we can't stop the fires, we can come together to support those working through them.

We're serving as a collection site for essential items to help local fire relief efforts. Every donation, no matter how small, will make a difference.

We mentioned vendor applications were open. (They are due by September 25th)

Now we are circling back for the people who saw the post, thought, β€œI should apply,” and then immediately got distracted by something else.

The **Military Business Market** is happening October 17 at the Idaho Outdoor Fieldhouse, and we are looking for veteran, service member, National Guard, Reserve, and military spouse-owned businesses from across Idaho.

Makers. Artists. Food vendors. Service providers. Nonprofits. Product-based businesses. Interactive businesses. Basically, if you are military-connected and building something worth showing off, this is your sign.

Vendor participation is free.

Yes, actually free.

No booth fee. No mysterious fine print. No need to explain to your spouse why you spent money on another event.

This is a curated market designed to put military-connected businesses in front of people who want to shop local, discover new brands, and support the entrepreneurs in this community.

**Applications close September 25, 2026.**

Do not let this become one of those tabs you keep open for six weeks and never finish.

Veterans are natural entrepreneurs.
And their talents, interests, passions and skill sets are incredibly diverse!
✨
So what's a public school music teacher and Navy MU Veteran to do when it's time to start considering the next stage in life?
πŸͺŠ
Meet Michael!
COVID is the background music to many big entrepreneurial changes in the score of life, and Michael is no exception.
🎢
With such a strong background in music (oh, and he met his wife, also a Veteran herself while playing trombone in the Navy, and she was a clarinet player!) πŸ’“
Michael discovered there wasn't a School of Rock location in Idaho, and loved the idea of kids learning to play, by playing something they actually LIKED to play.
🀩
The franchising process began, and after months of getting out there and meeting people, connecting with the business community, the School of Rock in Meridian began!
🎸
What's the best part? Watching people grow, learn to love and play, and create music. From kids ages 4 and up, kids can begin exploring music, with music appreciation, and then work their way forward as their skill and passion for music grows.
🎼
School of Rock Meridian, ID provides their students with opportunities to share their talent with the community as they progress, with live performances, modeled after musical themes!
🎡
So who's their target customer? Kids and adults that love music, want to play music, and want to find their space!
Parents, music lovers, and musicians, learn more on their website!

What's some good advice from this Veteran Entrepreneur for others?
πŸ™‹
"Don't be afraid to talk about yourself!" People want to know you, and why you love what you do, and that relationship creates abundance in your business and community.

We have officially removed the β€œI couldn’t make the time” excuse.

Entrepreneurial Mindset for Operators is a 45-minute virtual class offered 14 times from August 9 through 15, with one session at lunch and another in the evening each day.

πŸ•› 12:00 to 12:45 PM MT
πŸŒ™ 6:00 to 6:45 PM MT

You were trained to execute inside a structure. Business removes that structure, then quietly lets you blame yourself when things start slipping.

This session will help you rebuild the frame.

You will leave with a written three-habit routine that takes about 12 minutes a day and is built to survive a bad week, not just work during a perfect one.

Bring a notebook or open a blank document. Two working sessions are built into the class, so you will finish with your own routine on paper.

Every attendee will also receive:

πŸ“˜ A printable 10-day workbook
πŸ“– The Entrepreneurial Mindset Field Manual
πŸŽ₯ The session recording
❓ Written answers to questions submitted throughout the week

This class is free and built for veterans, military spouses, and transitioning service members building a business in Idaho.
