The face of incarceration is often a woman —and often a mother.

Idaho has had the highest rate of women’s incarceration in the nation since 2019. Behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a story that deserves to be understood.

The Idaho Justice Project’s Women’s Incarceration Report examines the factors driving these numbers and identifies opportunities for change that can strengthen families and improve outcomes.

Half of mothers in custody report **no contact** with their minor children—and only **15%** are able to have monthly visits.

Behind these numbers are real families navigating distance, cost, and complex systems just to stay connected. For many children, maintaining a relationship with a parent in prison is difficult — and sometimes impossible.

At Idaho Justice Project, we are working to better understand these barriers and advance solutions that strengthen families, improve outcomes, and reduce the long-term impact of incarceration.

Community Partner Spotlight: Day One

At the recent "More Than A Record" event, we connected with Day One, a service helping people build stability and connection during recovery and reentry.

Recovery and rebuilding life after incarceration often begin with one critical thing: support that lasts beyond day one.

Programs like Day One help individuals strengthen community, accountability, and long-term success.

We’re grateful for organizations doing the day-to-day work of helping Idahoans move forward.

Improving Idaho’s justice system doesn’t begin and end with the legislative session. This work continues year-round — through community partnerships, public education, policy conversations, and elevating the voices of people directly impacted by the system.

At Idaho Justice Project, we work to ensure formerly incarcerated people and impacted families have a voice in shaping the policies that affect their lives.

We are building a broad coalition of system-impacted individuals, community members, lawmakers, justice system stakeholders, agency leaders, nonprofits, and businesses committed to creating smarter, more effective approaches to justice in Idaho.

Real change happens when people work together.

💔 “Every time I visit my child, I have to explain the handcuffs again.”

For many incarcerated mothers, the hardest part of incarceration is the separation from their children — and the emotional toll those visits can carry for both parent and child.

Nearly 80% of incarcerated women are mothers, and most were the primary caregivers for their children before incarceration.

When a mother is incarcerated, the impact reaches far beyond prison walls. Children, families, and entire communities carry the consequences.

At Idaho Justice Project, we believe safer communities and stronger families go hand in hand.

🗳️ Today is Primary Election Day in Idaho.

As Idahoans head to the polls, it’s important to remember that for some people navigating the justice system, voting rights and eligibility rules can be confusing — and the consequences for mistakes can be life-changing.

Recall the story of Laurie E.

After being released on parole in 2018, Laurie received a voter registration pamphlet in the mail in 2020. Believing she was eligible to participate, she registered and voted.

Two years later, she was arrested and spent four months in custody for illegal voting — a parole violation she did not realize she had committed.

Laurie’s experience highlights the challenges many people face during reentry, where confusing rules and technical violations can lead to re-incarceration instead of successful reintegration.

On this Election Day, her story is a reminder of why clear policies, accessible information, and strong reentry support matter.

At Idaho Justice Project, we continue working toward a justice system that promotes restoration, accountability, and successful reentry into community life.

I enjoyed participating in last weekend’s "More Than A Record" event and having the opportunity to share more about our RUNNING FOR FREEDOM campaign.

What stayed with me most were the wonderful people and organizations showing up to support healing, restoration, second chances, and stronger communities. It was inspiring to be surrounded by so many people doing meaningful work.

I was especially grateful that our Inner Peace Training for system-impacted women could be part of the conversation.

At The Peace Room, in partnership with Idaho Justice Project, we’re building this program to support incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women through emotional healing, nervous system regulation, and reconnecting with themselves in a deeper way.

This work matters deeply to me.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our table, asked questions, offered encouragement, supported our fundraising efforts, or helped spread the word. Every conversation reminded me that we’re not doing this alone.

I’m grateful for this growing community and excited for what’s ahead. 💛

This quote hits hard:
“My biggest struggle is still having that jacket of being a felon… it’s the shame.”

Even after serving time and making progress, many people carry the invisible weight of stigma.

This woman now works with others coming out of incarceration — using her story to inspire, guide, and uplift. But the pain of being judged for her past still lingers.

🌀 “I hate seeing people who I know can succeed, and then they go back into the system.”

We can do better. That means:
✨ Supporting reentry
✨ Ending the stigma
✨ Creating real pathways to succeed

Because people are more than their record.

🔁 Share if you believe in second chances.
