Ephesians 6:12 says, "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against...spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places." When our children develop strongholds of pride, arguing, meanness, or dishonesty, it can feel like we are wrestling against flesh and blood, but we have to remember who the real enemy is, put on the full armor of God (6:13), and take our stand against him. Deeply rooted problems call for heart-based solutions. Here are some suggestions for getting started. 👇🏼

Our job and privilege as Christian parents is to help mold our children’s hearts and minds so that one day they make it home safely to their Father in heaven. This means we have to reach them at a heart level, not just control or excuse their outward behavior. Effective parenting requires good theology & strategy.

But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. Colossians 3:12-14

As believers, we are all encouraged to cultivate love for others. We get to practice this most intimately right at home. We come face to face with each other's weaknesses every day. It can be easy to start to focus on each other's flaws, but what if we took the time to recognize and appreciate each other's strengths? Here are some very simple things you can do to move toward oneness with your spouse this week. May it be a great one!

How is your parenting gig going? As imperfect people, most of us have a tendency to focus on one of two extremes: we're either all about firmness & consequences or we're all about relationship & grace. Both are necessary, but on their own and without a plan, neither is great in the long run. It's easy to miss other powerful tools that land between the two extremes that God has shown us in His Word for impacting a child’s heart.

Today I have a question (or a few) for you - a little something to make us think about married life, the one to whom we made our vows, and the impact of our own sinful nature on this earthly picture of God's love for his church. No need to respond here, but maybe it can inspire a conversation with God or your spouse.

James 4:1 says, "What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?" What if the problems we experience in married life aren't primarily circumstantial or relational? What if it isn't conflict or finances or intimacy that pull us away from each other? What if we each considered our own sinful hearts to be the biggest problem in our relationship?

John 15:5 says, "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." What if the best thing we can do to move toward the marriage we've always dreamed of is to honor the one who created marriage, allowing Him to work in our own hearts FIRST? What if, by God's grace, we found the humility to recognize the part we play in our marriage problems? What if we learned to love radically, forgive biblically, respond graciously, and serve each other faithfully because we are grafted into the source of perfect love?
