"What should we focus on first if our membership is declining?"

When membership is declining, the first step is not to focus only on getting more people in the door. Start by looking at the experience you are creating for the families already in your program.

Ask yourself:

Are our Scouts having fun? Do families feel connected? Are new members welcomed and included? Would our current families invite their friends to join us?

Strong membership growth starts with a strong Scouting experience.

Before recruiting more families, make sure the families you have are excited to stay. Create adventures worth sharing. Celebrate achievements. Build friendships. Make every meeting, activity, and event something Scouts look forward to.

Then take that energy into the community.

Invite families to experience what your unit does best. Don't just tell people about Scouting. Show them through a fun activity, a great event, or a memorable adventure.

Membership growth is not a quick fix. It is the result of creating a program that families want to be part of and proud to share with others.

Challenge your unit to ask one question: "If a family visited us today, would they see the kind of Scouting experience we would want them to tell their friends about?"

Improve the experience, share the story, and growth will follow.

Hey, families! Did you know that World Scout Scarf Day is coming up on Saturday, August 1?

Around the world, of all ages will sport their neckerchiefs (Scout scarves) next weekend to demonstrate their commitment to Scouting’s values. Through , youth learn that the neckerchief is more than a clothing item, alone – it’s a tool that serves first aid and other purposes in a pinch! Every year, World Scout Scarf Day is an opportunity to show your involvement in Scouting – whether you’re a current Scout, volunteer, Scouting advocate, parent or otherwise.

As we get ready for the big day, we want to see (and show off!) YOUR neckerchiefs! We’re working on a special post for World Scout Scarf Day and we want to feature as many Scouts and Scouters as possible. For a chance to be featured, send us an email at [email protected]. Include photos of you sporting your neckerchiefs and/or photos of the neckerchiefs, alone. Please ensure you are following uniform standards in the photos you send.

NOTE: We do not know how many people will submit their photos. To streamline the process, include in the subject line of your email to us. To give us the required permissions/approvals to use the photos/videos (media) and copy you send for social media, marketing and PR purposes, include in your email. Individuals under 18 MUST CC a parent or trusted adult.

Calling all Scouts of Owyhee District and the Mountain West Council!

Come out to JesusFest 2026 today July 25th at Lakeview Park in Nampa Idaho. Come out and enjoy the day showing the community your Scouting Sprit in reverence anytime between 12 noon and 8:00 pm. Help youth make a boat and race them on the rain gutter regatta track.

It’s going to be a fun day and we’d love to see you stop by our Scouting America booth. There will be food vendors, music, and fellowship.

Show your America 250 Pride and help sweep the park area for trash after 8:00 pm to serve this wonderful community.
