Although he worked in many painting media, Dr. Peck’s name is synonymous with watercolor. His reputation as a deft watercolorist is exemplified by his use of subtle color variations and his great instincts for landscapes. It has been said that if Idahoans see a watercolor that captures the beauty of the Idaho landscape, they expect to find Peck’s signature on it. His pastoral landscapes have a distinct and unique Idaho ambiance.

What is the ‘Dr. Louis A. Peck Legacy Project?’

Dr. Louis A. Peck was the Art Department Chair at what is now Boise State University. He led the department from 1955 to 1989. He developed the staff from one person to a highly respected staff of 25 when he retired in 1989-90.

The ‘Dr. Peck Legacy Project’ is about his life, legacy and educational career as a longtime Boise Junior College, Boise College, Boise State College, and finally Boise State University, art professor.

Our Goals:

We have dedicated ourselves to giving Dr. Peck the love, honor and respect he deserves as a major founding figure at his institution and to catalog, archive and preserve his sensitive and beautiful paintings and his career as an art educator for posterity, through proper recognition, preservation, commemoration and of course.... education.

Carol Peck Hill, Dr. Peck’s daughter has teamed up with his former student, James Walker, to educate, inform and solicit feedback from his students and university alumni. Dr. Peck was the art department foundational figure, during the rapid growth and transformation from BJC to BSU. It could be said that, just as Lyle Smith was the face of Bronco football during that time, Dr. Peck was the face of the ‘Art Department.’ Anyone who knew them both would agree with that assessment. They both loved and championed their respective disciplines equally well.

Our Current Projects:

We are now digitally preserving the large collection of his work that Carol has as well as any other works in existence that we can temporarily borrow to digitize in the future. This is an ongoing project now underway, using the very best state-of-the-art technology.

We are all non-paid volunteers working for Dr. Peck’s legacy.
