We bring good news to all deer hunters who think they made some “mistake” last season or feel like “disaster” struck: The arrival of fawns each spring is the annual correction that makes it difficult for us to do long-term damage to deer populations. Learn more 👇👇

NDA President & CEO Nick Pinizzotto was invited to participate in the Wildlife State of the Union Panel at the annual Professional Outdoor Media Association conference in Hugo, Minnesota on May 2.

In addition to NDA, the panel included representatives from the National Wild Turkey Federation, Pheasants Forever, Safari Club International, Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society, and Delta Waterfowl.

Nick used his time to address pressing conservation issues facing deer in the United States. He also urged outdoor communicators in the audience to speak out in support of science-based wildlife conservation and management, as the credibility of wildlife science and the authority of professional wildlife agencies are under attack from multiple angles.

POMA is a membership-based organization for professional communicators in the outdoor media industry, including writers, photographers, broadcasters and marketers. We thank POMA for the opportunity to speak to their members!

On June 3, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department announced it had received confirmation of a case of New World screwworm in Zavala County, Texas, about 100 miles southwest of San Antonio. The infected animal was a 3-week-old calf. This wasn’t unexpected, as cases in livestock in northern Mexico had been nearing the U.S. border in recent months. The New World screwworm lays its eggs in open wounds or mucous membranes of livestock and wildlife, including deer. The larvae eat living tissue. Hunters in Texas and along the Gulf Coast are urged to be vigilant for infected wounds on living deer and report them to their state wildlife agency. For more information about how the USDA and TPWD are responding, see our recent article:

Relatively new research shows that feral hogs aren't being infected with CWD, but that they can carry and spread it.

Emerging research shows feral swine carry chronic wasting disease prions. Here's why that's a big problem for deer and wildlife management.
