The Austin–San Antonio region is becoming increasingly connected, creating new opportunities across Central and South Texas.

We recently attended the 2026 Austin–San Antonio Growth Summit in New Braunfels, where nearly 600 business and civic leaders gathered to discuss the continued growth of the I-35 corridor and what it means for the region’s future.

With the Austin–San Antonio corridor projected to reach approximately 8.5 million people by 2050, speakers discussed how the region is evolving into a more interconnected economic corridor, similar to the way Dallas and Fort Worth grew together to form the DFW Metroplex.

For Boerne and Kendall County, that connectivity brings opportunity. A stronger regional economy expands access to talent, customers, investment, business partnerships and major employment centers, while creating new opportunities for businesses throughout the region.

It also makes thoughtful planning increasingly important. Transportation, infrastructure, workforce and housing will all play a role in how communities respond to continued growth.

Staying engaged in these regional conversations helps Boerne and Kendall County understand the trends shaping our larger economy and remain positioned for the opportunities ahead.

The I-35 corridor may be at the center of this emerging megaregion, but its economic impact extends well beyond the interstate.

Workforce development starts long before someone submits their first job application.

Today, we had the opportunity to hear directly from Boerne ISD CTE teachers and students about the hands-on experiences preparing students for life and careers beyond high school.

And there is a lot happening!

In Culinary Arts, students are catering and working events and building culinary skills while also learning customer service, communication and the people skills that matter in the hospitality industry.

In Plant Science the students are creating and selling floral arrangements to support their program and even have their first wedding coming up! One Plant Science practicum student is also gaining real-world experience with EDC member Agave Design Studio LLC.

That connection between students and local employers was a recurring theme today. As one CTE teacher put it: “These students want to learn. It’s our job to mentor them.”

And the numbers show just how much is happening: 68 CTE teachers, 249 practicum students and 485 students earning recognized Industry-Based Certifications. CTE opportunities are also beginning at the middle school level.

For our local business community, this is an opportunity to do more than fill a position. Hosting a practicum student gives a young person real-world experience while helping build our future workforce.

One of the conversations at this year’s Kendall County Economic Summit focused on the growing impact of hospitality and tourism across our area. A recent San Antonio Business Journal article took a closer look at one of the opportunities discussed that morning.

Comfort is located in the heart of the Hill Country, within easy reach of San Antonio, Fredericksburg and Kerrville. That location is a tremendous asset for attracting visitors, but the proximity also creates an opportunity to capture more of the economic impact those visitors bring.

According to the SABJ, approximately 18,700 overnight stays associated with visits to Comfort ultimately occurred somewhere else.

And where visitors stay matters. An overnight visit can mean dinner at a local restaurant, shopping at local businesses, a visit to a w**ery or attraction, breakfast the next morning and more visitor dollars circulating through the local economy.

But numbers like these do more than just identify a challenge. They can help identify opportunity. Existing visitor demand can help inform conversations about future lodging, hospitality businesses, attractions and other investments that give people more reasons to stay longer and spend more while they’re here.

Kendall County already has something incredibly valuable: people want to be here! The opportunity is finding ways to turn more of that interest into economic activity that supports businesses and communities throughout the county.
