Ever seen a caterpillar that looks like bird p**p?! This is a Giant Swallowtail caterpillar, also known as the “bird p**p” caterpillar, on Wafer Ash or Hop Tree (Ptelea trifoliata), one of its favorite host plants. The caterpillar's unusual appearance is actually camouflage that helps protect it from hungry predators.

What may look like a little bird dropping today will eventually become one of North America's largest butterflies, the Giant Swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes). Adults can reach an impressive wingspan of 4–6 inches and are strikingly patterned with black wings accented by bold yellow bands and touches of red and blue.

At our last NPSOT Boerne meeting, we had the pleasure of recognizing several members for their milestone membership anniversaries in 2026.

This year’s celebration was especially meaningful as we honored several members who have reached an incredible 25 years of membership—the same dedicated individuals who helped found the Boerne Chapter 25 years ago. Their vision, leadership, and commitment to native plants laid the foundation for the thriving chapter we enjoy today.

Thank you to all of our anniversary honorees for your years of support, service, and passion. We are grateful for everything you have contributed to NPSOT and look forward to many more years together!

Bees are buzzing happily on this beautiful Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) at the park on River Road this morning. It’s in peak blooming season: From June through September, Buttonbush puts on a show with its unique, globe-shaped clusters of tiny white flowers that resemble pincushions, attracting lots of pollinators. Its seeds provide food for waterfowl and other birds.

This beautiful native shrub is an excellent choice for naturalizing wet areas, and it’s great for a rain garden, pond edge, or other wet area.

The female Elbow Bush (Forestiera pubescens), also known as Desert Olive, is absolutely lush with berries right now! This Texas native shrub is not only beautiful, but incredibly valuable for wildlife 🐝🐦‍⬛🪺🦋Its berries provide food for birds and other wildlife and its dense growth offers shelter and nesting sites. It blooms as early as January, and those early blooms are an important nectar source for bees and butterflies when few other plants are flowering.
Because of its dense, thicket-forming habit, Elbow Bush works wonderfully as a background planting, natural screen, or wildlife-friendly hedge in Texas landscapes. Native, hardy, and beneficial to pollinators and other wildlife.
