A Modern Girl’s Guide To Celebrating Indian Culture

After our Maharani weddings, there was not really a time that we thought much about Indian food, culture and traditions ’til we had our children. We became curious about the spices in the thali our mom kept at our house and thought about how to teach our kids Hindi (uhh… Hindi DVDs anyone?). We want our children to enjoy the traditions and holi

days that we were raised with, but also want to add a fresh perspective by incorporating modern day tools and ideas to enhance their cultural journey and make it fun for everyone. This is our challenge and Maharani Mamas is our way of bringing like minded Mamas together to share and collaborate on how to bring Indian culture into their homes in a fun and innovative way.

We are wrapping up the 5 day festival of light, dharma and delight. It is called Diwali/Deepawali.

Deepawali marks the establishment of dharma that allows the awakening of our highest potential. This festival celebrates the illumination of human being to the level of humanity and from humanity to divinity. It is a battle between our dark and bright tendencies, choices and inclinations. May the goodness, righteousness, virtue and light win the heaviness of darkness.

The festival lasts for 5 days where each day has a special symbolic meaning and rituals associated with it. The homes, work places, city, bazaars, temples are all decorated with lights and decorations. The festival brings the community together in the spirit of growth, prosperity, health and happiness.

Let us talk about what happens each day during these five days:
