I have always loved reading book reviews. This NYT piece dives into how artificial intelligence is reshaping the world of book reviews — from debates over quality and authenticity to controversies around using AI in literary criticism and what it means for the future of cultural coverage. Lots to think about.

The Star on the Grave with Author Linda Margolin Royal

This historical novel is inspired by the true story of Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara, who defied his government in 1940 to issue visas to Jewish refugees fleeing the N***s, saving thousands of lives. After the war, he was dismissed and faded into obscurity.

Decades later in Australia, Rachel Margol discovers a hidden family secret—she is Jewish. As she confronts the impact of this revelation, long-buried truths emerge. When she has the chance to meet Sugihara, who saved her family, she travels to Japan seeking answers that may heal—or divide—her family.

Often called the “Japanese Schindler,” Sugihara is credited with saving about 6,000 people, with hundreds of thousands of descendants alive today—including the author’s own family.

Antisemitism, An American Tradition with author Pamela S. Nadell

The Jews have known Antisemitism in America since they landed in New Amsterdam in 1654. Despite the nation’s ideals, negative stereotypes led to social and professional restrictions, vandalism, and violence. Antisemitic incidents are increasing annually. Pamela S. Nadell’s book, Antisemitism, an American Tradition, explores this history and how Jews fought back through legal channels, advocacy organizations, and alliances against hate. Her work urges us to confront this enduring hatred.

Pamela S. Nadell is the Patrick Clendenen Chair in Women’s and Gender History and director of Jewish Studies at American University. Her works include the 2019 NJBA Jewish Book of the Year, America’s Jewish Women. She lives in North Bethesda, Maryland.
