History of the BGAC
It all began in the home of Barbara Seitz, where 13 artists and 2 honorary members gathered with a shared dream: to form an organization that would support professional artists and promote the arts in Boca Grande. That dream took its first public step in April 1987, when the group held their inaugural exhibition at the Johann Fust Library. For the first time, local artists showcased their work together under one roof. It was a magical moment, the heart and soul of a new creative movement.
With strong encouragement from the community, that early vision took shape. The group formally incorporated as the Boca Grande Art Alliance, with a mission to promote the arts through education and exhibitions. Fueled by the passion of artists and the generosity of dedicated volunteers, the Alliance quickly became a cornerstone of the island’s cultural life.
As the years passed, the organization expanded its impact. What began as a collective of exhibiting artists grew into something much larger—a community hub for creative learning, enrichment, and connection. The Alliance introduced a robust offering of art workshops, educational programs for students at The Island School and summer camps, and a growing calendar of exhibitions, lectures, and cultural tours.
It became clear that we had evolved into more than an alliance of artists. We had become the heart of the arts in Boca Grande. In 2013, we embraced that identity with a new name: the Boca Grande Art Center.
Today, the Art Center proudly carries forward its founding spirit: nurturing creativity, sharing knowledge, and celebrating the power of the arts to bring people together.
