We have been busy at Celebrate Bluffton working on adding new content to the DiscoverLowcountry site. If you haven't checkout the tour, it is now up and running and I am happy to say has had a steady stream of visitors.

New to the site is a section featuring virtual exhibits. The first one entitled, History of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in the South, is now available with more coming in the future. These are exhibits that Celebrate Bluffton has researched and built focused on the history of the Lowcountry. They have been on display at various locations and events including: the Penn Center on St. Helena Island, the Bluffton Library, Bluffton Boundary and the Arts and Seafood Festival and now they are available on your screens. For the best viewing experience, use a desktop or laptop computer.

If you have been out and about in Old Town Bluffton, no doubt you have noticed the construction work going on opposite the Church of the Cross at the end of Calhoun Street. The result will be the Wright Family Park. During construction the remnants of a what is believed to be the Squire Pope cottage were discovered. The house was burned down during the burning of Bluffton in 1863. No pictures of the house exist and much of what is know comes from letters. The piers verify the location of the house and possibly it’s orientation which has been in dispute. The house at the back of the property was turned into a residence for the surviving family members after the Civil War; made up of what is believed to be a carriage house and other odds n’ ends. Physical remains offer clues to those curious enough to search and study them. The past as we know it is always changing as new information comes to light and and modern values and perceptions shape how we view history. The story of the families who once lived in the now gone house is told on the Discover Bluffton tour.
