81 years ago in a frozen landscape, in the same clothes he had been wearing for more than two weeks, battle-worn and weary Captain Fred A. "Fritz" Owens of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division found a way to write his last letter (of more than 200) to his beloved wife Sara on his birthday, January 1, 1945. The following day, January 2, 1945, he was killed between the villages of Foy and Bizory alongside the railroad line, just outside of Bastogne, while fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. For fifty-two years, his memory lived only in Sara's heart until her daughter would discover his trunk in the attic.
Many of us will spend today thinking of the year ahead, pondering resolutions, planning for the future - a whole lifetime away from a foxhole in a frozen landscape. And yet, remembering Fritz changes what it means to be resolute โ to decide firmly on a course of action. It changes understanding of what is worthy of that resolve. 81 years later, it is a gift to think of Fritz on his birthday. It is a gift to have his life give perspective on ours today. It is a gift to remember him, and the men like him, who moved forward with selfless determination, who lived sacrifice, and who embodied honor. May the New Year bring humility, clarity, understanding, determination and integrity all woven through with potent resolve. Happy Birthday, Fritz.
