Hello Friends of Camp Roland,

After months (years?) of anticipation and prep work, the NEW rappelling tower at Camp Roland is finally taking shape. It has been a long time coming! We were able to secure 4 poles from Appalachian Power Company (thank you APCO) who delivered them to Exit 58 at Interstate 77. We were able to transport the poles to Camp (which was no easy task - you've seen the curves on Route 614!). Saturday, under the supervision of Tim Wallace (our climbing and rappelling expert for decades, now) the poles were erected. Thank you to Rick Woods and Roy Kennedy of R. L. Woods Excavating for digging the holes and setting the poles in place.

We will have a WORK DAY at Camp Roland this Saturday (AUGUST 1st) to keep the momentum rolling. In the next phase of the tower project we need to install the climbing/rappelling walls. We will:
remove the "old" pressure treated wood from the existing tower (we need lots of battery operated drills with Phillips head bits).
Move the "salvaged" planks to the new tower and install them (again, we will need lots of drills with Phillips head bits and galvanized screws
There are other chores that we can work on if wall demolition/construction isn't your "thing." We also need to:
Cut the trees from under the bridge across Wolf Creek (need chain saws, ropes/cables/chains, and waders or water friendly boots)
Cut the waist high grass inside the pool fence (I will provide a string trimmer "mower" if anyone is interested.
Cut small trees overhanging the road to the Rifle Range (chainsaws)
Cut brush along the pond and elsewhere around camp
We are inviting Scout units and adults to volunteer their time on Saturday. Obviously, we need adults to operate machines/equipment like chain saws and mowers. We have some "chores" for Scouts, too.

If you can provide an hour or two to help improve and maintain Camp Roland SATURDAY, AUGUST 1st, please email me and let me know what you like on your pizza. Also give me an idea of what task you would like to be assigned to, what time you plan to arrive and how long you can stay.

If you have a case of "Cabin Fever" here is an opportunity to break out for a little while. We will embrace SAFE PRACTICES including temperature checks, the use of face coverings, and social distancing while serving Camp Roland.

Get outside, help your beloved Camp, and have a good time. Please reply today!

SATURDAY - April 18, 2020
WORK DAY at Camp Roland beginning at 9:00 a.m. - This is NOT a virtual workday! Ya gotta be there!

Last Saturday a hearty group of 4 burly men braved the elements (sunshine and warm temperatures) to begin working on our beloved Camp and preparing it for the 2020 season. Yes, I truly believe that we WILL camp this summer so we need to be prepared!
We moved some old mattresses from the Med Lodge, Cut some trees at the Rifle Range, and began removing some lumber from the "old" rappelling tower. The poles for the "new" rappelling tower have arrived at Camp Roland (PLEASE do not cut them up into firewood!!!).

If you have a touch of "cabin fever" and need to get out, please come over to Camp Roland on Saturday and get some exercise! It is a big camp so there is plenty of room for "social distancing." If you have a chain saw, we have plenty of work for you. If you have a shovel or a rake, we have plenty of work for you. If you don't have any tools, we have plenty of work for you! Please let me know if you are available by email or telephone (276) 964-2959. We will find you a job!

This is NOT an official event. The camp is officially closed. This is just a bunch of folks getting together to try and do some good!

Hope to see you tomorrow and/or Saturday. Stay safe and stay sane!
