What does it take to run a business? More than you might think.

Entrepreneurs have to manage expenses, attract customers, and make smart decisions — all while hoping to turn a profit. It's exciting, challenging, and one of the best ways to learn financial skills that last a lifetime.

At SOE, students don't just shop — they own the shops. They stock merchandise, serve customers, and try to make their business a success by the end of the day. Future Kansas City business owners in the making!

If you could start any business, what would it be? Tell us below!

Nobody's favorite topic — but one of the most important ones.

Taxes fund the roads we drive on, the schools we learn in, and the parks where we play. Understanding how taxes work — and why we pay them — helps young people become informed, engaged citizens.

Yes, even SOE students pay taxes! During their marketplace experience, students pay rent and taxes out of their earnings, learning that participating in an economy comes with shared responsibilities.

What's one thing your tax dollars fund that you're grateful for?

From our Executive Director:

Thank you so much for all the well wishes! It has been an absolute honor to serve the students, families, volunteers, and staff who make up SOE.

Over the past five years, we successfully reopened SOE after 19 months of closure during COVID and have grown from serving approximately 5,000 students annually to more than 16,000 students this fiscal year and counting!

Everything we accomplished was only possible because of the dedication, passion, and hard work of the entire exceptional SOE team. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve this wonderful community and confident that SOE is well positioned to continue thriving for years to come! ❤️

At SOE, we encourage our staff to volunteer and give back to the community. This week, our team used volunteer hours to pack activity bags for kids and families staying at Ronald McDonald House Charities. 💙

Borrowing money isn't free — and the sooner kids learn that, the better.

When you take out a loan, you agree to pay back the original amount PLUS interest. That extra cost is what makes borrowing a big decision — not just a quick fix.

At SOE, students can take out small bank loans during our marketplace program. They quickly discover that loans need to be repaid — and that spending more than you earn has real consequences.

Did you learn about interest in school growing up? We'd love to hear your story!
