The annual Ride of Silence is a free community ride hosted in over 200 cities worldwide. These somber, meaningful, slow-paced group rides aims to:

🙌 Remind the public that bicyclists have a legal right to the public roads

🙌 Ask that motorists and bicyclists safely share the road

🙌 Honor those who have been killed or injured while bicycling on public roads

Eight Illinois communities in Illinois are offering Rides of Silence this Wednesday, May 20. If you live in or near one of these communities, make plans to participate in an important, awareness-raising, casual group ride. The 2026 Ride of Silence will not be quiet!

Last Monday, a 25-year old man was killed by a hit-and-run driver while bicycling in Village of Elwood, IL, south of Joliet. Illinois State Police are requesting the public’s assistance with the investigation. Anyone who was driving in the area around that date and time and may have dash camera footage or witnessed the scene are asked to contact ISP Special Agents at 815-221-2709 or submit a tip on ISP’s Crime Tip website. Police haven’t determined the type of vehicle involved, but said the suspect may have been driving a 2007 to 2013 Chevrolet Silverado pickup.

Ride Illinois shares information about fatal crashes involving bicyclists to inform the public, to encourage vigilance when biking, and to increase awareness when driving that people moving about outside of motor vehicles are particularly vulnerable. Regardless of your mode of travel, please be alert, slow down, and be mindful of the human beings you encounter along the way ❤️
