Blue Hill Pedal It Forward

Blue Hill Pedal It Forward Every child should experience the joy of riding a bicycle. Every child should have a bicycle.

Big box stores have produced a culture of selling disposable bicycles, and this is not only bad for our environment but counter-thetical to all that is good...

Thank you friends and supporters of Blue Hill Pedal It Forward. I apologize for the long slumber, but as with many passion projects, there is a bit of fatigue and burn-out that creeps along. Well, it has been an especially busy start of summer for our crew, but I think that we are beginning to feel the need to again get our hands greasy and our heads in gears. Before we begin in earnest, if I may boldly make a request as we have moved once again. Our seemingly annual sojourn in Blue Hill.

We are thankful for finding a new home and for the last place we rested our heads, but I am sending out a request/favor to all friends of Blue Hill Pedal-It-Forward who have a truck or trailer to help me move a few trips worth of bikes from our old home to our new one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for all the kindness (already) extended to this endeavor.

Please phone or text me at 207-479-0375.

We continue to chug along, though it is not quite the heyday of the summer. Thank you for the continued donations as boys and girls grow out of their bikes from this summer, and I'll continue to pair them with new homes. I wish that I could post every smile.

We always encourage the wearing of bicycle helmets, so please forgive the picture. I'll explain. Bikes are near and dear to me. In my 40 odd years of life, there is little that I have kept from my childhood, but you can see my two boys riding my two first Schwinn bicycles. My older son is riding my BMX dirt bike, and much like the little hot rod punk that I was, he wanted to emulate the shin-scrapping, mogul-jumping num-num that I was by riding the bike without a helmet (much like Daddy's stories).

We continue forward here at BH Pedal It Forward. A few more generous donations have come in (Thank you friends!), and we hope to work on these soon to re-home.

I have had about 10 "little kid"/first bikes sitting around for about a month now, so I made the executive decision to donate these to our "homeless" neighbors. Believe it or not, there is a homeless population of children and families here, and I found a way to get bicycles to these children. I am thankful to our community of friends that has allowed BHPIF to make this contribution of 10 bicycles to these children.

These are the bikes ready for a new home. All children's bikes, which skew younger to first bikes with training wheels and other bikes for littles. We have 5 adult bikes in our "shop", waiting on a new delivery of parts...but they are all accounted for. I hope to get those out and ready to hit the road soon.

I'm sorry that it has been some time since I last wrote and updated. We continue to chug along: receiving bikes, cleaning and fixing them as they come in, and then re-homing bikes. Already this summer, we have had some of "our" bikes return to us as kids have outgrown them, and they have now found their 3rd home. How exciting. For those of you waiting, we continue to suffer from the bottleneck of supplies from China.

As I work in my new space, there is a beautiful hummingbird that comes and visits me. I'm usually so mesmerized by its majesty as the dear bird hovers in the frame of the elevated bike that I am working on. It is quite a sight, and I hope to share its beauty by grabbing my phone next time. Until then, please enjoy this equally beautiful card given by a little friend.

How did you spend your afternoon? I wish that I had a little more motivation that I could have presented this explosion of bike odds and ends in a more artistic fashion.

So, we took a bit of a hiatus, but we are back in business. I want to especially thank Bill Gray (of GSA) for his kindness and generosity of spirit as we went through a period of transition. To date, we have given away over 50 bikes. You, our community, have been so giving..donating bikes of all values and qualities...and providing donations in-kind to this little project of ours. While our focus is on the children and families of our peninsula, our reach has extended to MDI. I continue to be thankful to each and everyone of you for your support. Let's get back to biking. Please continue to PM, phone, and text me. I appreciate it all.
