Coming up this weekend! Great opportunity to learn from a visiting expert in the field. Surry Garden Club

We are really excited to host Chad Hammer, invasive plant biologist with the Maine Dept. of Ag, Conservation and Forestry for this
important educational effort, co-sponsored by the Evergreen Garden Club of Deer Isle. You may not succeed in eradicating the invasive plants in your neighborhood, but you can - and should! - understand why they are a problem and learn best practices to manage them. Birds, bees, moths, butterflies and bats will thank you!

We'll have the wood stove going if needed, but the historic Rural Hall can be chilly in April, so bundle up. All are welcome; hearty refreshments served at 12:30. The department's excellent Invasive Plants Field Guide will be available for sale.

The Hall has plenty of room! We would love to see widespread progress on managing the invasive plants in our beautiful coastal towns. Please pass the word, friends at Bar Harbor Garden Club, Bucksport Garden Club, Blue Hill Heritage Trust, Blue Hill Garden Club and the Ellsworth Garden Club.

🌱 From Lawn to Living Landscape: Backyard Rewilding Workshop

Are you tired of spending your weekends mowing, watering, and fertilizing a lawn that gives little back to nature? Or maybe you've started planting native species and want to take your yard’s ecological impact even further?

Join Hancock County Soil & Water Conservation District and Native Gardens of Blue Hill for a workshop exploring how homeowners can transform traditional lawns into thriving, wildlife-supporting landscapes using native plants.

📅 Saturday, March 21, 2026
⏰ 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM
📍 Moore Community Center, 125 State St., Ellsworth, ME

Fee is $10 per person

This immersive workshop will cover:
• What backyard rewilding is and why it matters
• How native plants support pollinators, birds, and soil health
• How to evaluate your yard’s conditions (sun, soil, moisture)
• Which native species work best in Maine landscapes
• Practical ways to reduce lawn while keeping your yard attractive

FEATURED SPEAKERS:

🌿Aidan Meidenbauer, Technical Services Manager at Hancock County Soil & Water Conservation District, will introduce the backyard rewilding movement and share how the District works with landowners across Hancock County.

🌿Cathy Rees, co-founder and Executive Director of Native Gardens of Blue Hill, will lead a deep dive into native plants and how to use them effectively in home landscapes.

Participants will also learn about free programs and services available through HCSWCD, including site visits, conservation landscape certification, and soil pH testing.

Whether you’re new to native plants or looking to expand your habitat garden, this workshop will give you the tools and inspiration to get started.
