Lee Ross of Stanford University tested how much the name of a game mattered. One group was told they were playing the "Wall Street Game" and the other group was told they were playing the "Community Game" despite the games and their rules being identical. These groups were comprised of college students and Israeli pilots as well as their instructors.

The findings of this study showed that when playing the "Community Game" the majority of participants cooperated with each other. While playing the "Wall street game" only 33% of players chose to participate with one another. Even players that were considered to be cooperative players proved to be far LESS cooperative when told they were playing the "Wall Street" game.

What is the name of our game?

If Santa can still bring the world good cheer, so can you! Here are 5 tips to create community connection during this holiday season if you don’t have family near.
1. Check out local events. The Chamber hosts a meet and greet Santa event every year where everyone is welcome.
2. Host a cookie exchange. What a great way to share your family holiday treat traditions.
3. Attend a holiday concert. Our school district puts on many holiday concerts during the season; choir, band, orchestra and elementary concerts in various school buildings. Many churches have holiday concerts as well!
4. Hand deliver a card or treats to your neighbors. Offering small gestures of goodwill to those who live nearby is a surefire bridge-builder for local community. Get to know someone new—and the next time your dog barks a bit too loud, they might just overlook it!
5. To invest in your community and lift your spirits, there’s nothing like serving others. Research shows that volunteering is associated with positive changes in well-being. Choose an organization whose mission you feel good about supporting.
