Being a NICU dad is a journey that changes you forever. My son was born at just 32.5 weeks and spent 34 days in the NICU at Abington Hospital. During that time, my wife spent three days in the ICU and two weeks in the hospital recovering. I spent my days split between the hospital and work, trying to balance being a dad, a husband, and a teacher during one of the most challenging times of our lives.
As a teacher, one of the things that helped me get through the day was having my son’s Angel Eye camera pulled up on my classroom smartboard. I was able to check on him throughout the day, and my students even got to watch him grow stronger right alongside me.
Fast forward 10 years, and that same little fighter is now a thriving, growing boy who plays multiple sports and excels in school. Seeing how far he has come is a daily reminder of just how strong these little superheroes are and how much hope can come from some of life’s hardest moments.
I am incredibly grateful to The Super Hero Project for the opportunity to attend today’s game in honor of Joe, a fellow NICU dad who tragically passed away at just 41 years old.
