After working closely with the residents of Bloom Mills, Mulberry Mills, and Silk Mills, the nursing students and others from Commonwealth University-Bloomsburg launched a special food bank initiative called Operation Thanks-Giving.

This project was created to collect food and hygiene items to support local older adults and community members experiencing hardships.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to the university and the dedicated students for their generosity and commitment to our community!

Today we’re with Ken.

Ken is naturally curious and always learning. Born and raised in Berwick, he grew up in a Christian family with his Grandfather being a Presbyterian minister. He earned a bachelor’s in Spanish from Bloomsburg University and later an associates in medical transcription.

Whether it’s writing stories about his family or volunteering at Camp Victory, he approaches life with care and curiosity.

As an adult with autism, Ken brings focus, dedication, and attention to detail to everything he does. He balances three jobs, at St. Matthew’s, a childcare center, and freelancing in transcription. “I’ve had a lot of jobs over the years—some I enjoyed, some not so much. Finding the right fit has been a challenge, but I feel pretty satisfied with where I am now,” he says.

Family and writing are his biggest inspirations. “My grandfather was always a big influence,” Ken shares. After his grandfather passed, Ken wrote a story about a family project from the 1990s. “I hope to publish it someday, it feels like a real accomplishment.”

Outside of work, Ken keeps busy with the gym, video games, and movies like Space Jam and Ghostbusters.

Volunteering at Camp Victory is another highlight, pairing up with campers and helping with activities. “I’m still finding my niche in life, but I feel lucky for the support and opportunities around me,” he says, grateful for the people and moments that make life meaningful.

Today we’re with Gloria, her son Jim, and son-in-law Greg.

Jim has always loved cooking, a skill he developed growing up in a large family where meals had to feed everyone. That love of preparing big portions has become a gift for his neighbors. “I just like seeing people enjoy what I make,” he says. From his cart proudly labeled Jimmy’s Food Cart, he delivers hearty meals and treats throughout the building. He and Greg often head to Giant together to collect marked-down baked goods, sharing them at bingo.

For Jim, cooking isn’t just about food, it’s a way of caring for others, just as he always has.
Greg was born blind, but that has never slowed him down. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting with his brothers, and today he still fishes alongside his wife. Around the building, he’s quick to guide neighbors who struggle with vision, offering help wherever it’s needed. “There’s not much he can’t do,” Gloria says, admiringly. His determination and independence inspire everyone around him.

Gloria carries with her the spirit of generosity she learned growing up during the war, when communities depended on each other and shared what they had. Today, she runs a free giveaway in the building: residents leave items they no longer need, and others can take them. “It’s like a yard sale, but it’s free,” she says. Whatever remains is eventually donated to charity, making sure nothing goes to waste.

Together, Gloria, Jim, and Greg have built a warm, connected place. Whether it’s sharing meals, offering guidance, or running the giveaway, their kindness and thoughtfulness fill the building. Their days are full of laughter, neighborly gestures, and shared activities, proving that generosity and friendship make a place truly feel like home.

Today we are with Steven.

Steven’s life has been shaped by resilience, independence, and quiet determination. He had a rough childhood and eventually joined the Navy.

His story isn’t without challenges: he’s faced personal struggles and battled substance use, but he’s now sober and focused on building a steady, meaningful life. Through it all, he’s grown into a man who values routine, responsibility, and the little joys of daily life.

Steven enjoys horseback riding at EOS Therapeutic Riding Center, where being around the horses gives him a sense of calm and focus. Back at home, he shares his space with his cat, joking, “It’s really her place. I just pay the bills.”

His days are simple but meaningful. From watching TV to sipping coffee, and taking care of his cat. “She’s family,” Steven says. “I talk to her more than most people and I think she understands.”

Though he keeps to himself, Steven appreciates connection. Small routines, hobbies, and a sense of independence are what make his life meaningful.

His advice to younger generations is straightforward, “Stay safe. Take care of yourself.”

Steven’s story is a reminder that even with a rough start and past struggles, life can be filled with sobriety, companionship, purpose, and quiet moments of joy.
