Today we’re with Gloria, her son Jim, and son-in-law Greg.
Jim has always loved cooking, a skill he developed growing up in a large family where meals had to feed everyone. That love of preparing big portions has become a gift for his neighbors. “I just like seeing people enjoy what I make,” he says. From his cart proudly labeled Jimmy’s Food Cart, he delivers hearty meals and treats throughout the building. He and Greg often head to Giant together to collect marked-down baked goods, sharing them at bingo.
For Jim, cooking isn’t just about food, it’s a way of caring for others, just as he always has.
Greg was born blind, but that has never slowed him down. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting with his brothers, and today he still fishes alongside his wife. Around the building, he’s quick to guide neighbors who struggle with vision, offering help wherever it’s needed. “There’s not much he can’t do,” Gloria says, admiringly. His determination and independence inspire everyone around him.
Gloria carries with her the spirit of generosity she learned growing up during the war, when communities depended on each other and shared what they had. Today, she runs a free giveaway in the building: residents leave items they no longer need, and others can take them. “It’s like a yard sale, but it’s free,” she says. Whatever remains is eventually donated to charity, making sure nothing goes to waste.
Together, Gloria, Jim, and Greg have built a warm, connected place. Whether it’s sharing meals, offering guidance, or running the giveaway, their kindness and thoughtfulness fill the building. Their days are full of laughter, neighborly gestures, and shared activities, proving that generosity and friendship make a place truly feel like home.
