2026 Medicare Open Enrollment: Protecting Yourself from Scams and Fraud
With Medicare Open Enrollment just around the corner, now is the time to approach Medicare choices with the same level of care and scrutiny you would give any important decision. Protecting Medicare beneficiaries through education and fraud prevention remains at the heart of what we do at Illinois SMP, so we're here to help you during this enrollment season to feel more empowered and informed, recognize potential red flags and other warning signs that deserve a closer look, and see beyond the marketing.
The Medicare Open Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7, and while many beneficiaries are reviewing coverage options, scammers and dishonest marketers are often increasing their outreach as well. Whether you're a Medicare beneficiary comfortable with your current plan, a caregiver helping a parent compare options, someone considering a specific plan for the first time, or a beneficiary who simply always answers the phone "just in case,” understanding common enrollment-related tactics can help you make confident decisions and protect your Medicare information as well as other personal information.
It’s important to note that not every misleading practice is fraud. During Open Enrollment, beneficiaries may encounter aggressive sales tactics, confusing marketing messages, or offers that sound better than they really are. A little extra caution can go a long way.
Watch out for:
• Marketing that creates a sense of urgency, making it feel like you need to make a decision right away.
• Advertisements that focus on attractive benefits while leaving out important details that could affect your costs or coverage.
• Claims that a particular plan is the "best" choice without or with little consideration to your individual health care needs, medications, or providers.
• Pressure to make a decision before you've had time to compare plans, ask questions, or talk it over with someone you trust.
• Messages that rely more on emotion and are designed to create fear, excitement, or confusion.
• Benefits or savings that sound too good to be true, especially when they aren't clearly explained.
• Answers that seem vague, inconsistent, or change when you ask follow-up questions.
• Anyone who discourages you from taking your time, doing additional research, or seeking unbiased assistance before making a decision.
