The Pipsqueakery The Pipsqueakery is a 501c3 animal rescue and sanctuary located in Bloomington, Indiana. EIN: 81-1655640

We care for a wide variety of animals, including native wildlife, exotic pets, rodents, farm animals and rabbits with a special focus on medically complex cases. The Pipsqueakery is a 501(c)3 nonprofit small animal rescue and sanctuary. We provide care for medically and behaviorally needy rodents and rabbits, educate the public on their care, and find forever homes and rescue placement for healthy adoptable animals. The Pipsqueakery focuses on the care of animals with medical conditions including paralysis, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, amputations, and dental disease. Our goal is to advance veterinary care and develop individual plans that prioritize accommodating the special needs of each animal to allow them to live a fulfilling life as independently as possible.

I’ve been meaning to share a Sharky update, because it’s been way too long!

This little nutcase went from death’s door to being, quite possibly, the fattest baby currently in residence!!

She’s with a group of three other baby Grays, and she gets LESS formula than they do! They’ve transitioned to eating solids as well as their milkies, and every time it’s her turn, she’s so stuffed feeling that I’m worried if I give her the same amount as everyone else, she might burst!

Sharky will Overwinter with me, but this Spring she’ll get to be free and truly wild.

This is one of the happy ones, folks. They don’t always turn out this well, so I’m absolutely relishing that chubbly little belly.

Uhm. October is Squirrel Appreciation Month? Sign me up!

Today, I showed appreciation to the squirrels by treating everyone to pomegranate arils!

Now, these are NOT in any way a staple food — their calcium to phosphorus ratio is all kinds of inverted. But! All the squirrels absolutely loved them, and one of the benefits to an overall healthy, rounded diet, is getting to sometimes enjoy not-so-perfect treats!

Keeping things varied is a huge part of keeping these busy little guys and gals happy while they’re in care, be that on a temporary rehab stay or a permanent Non Releasable Permit. Surprisingly, even Tilly liked these, and she’s notoriously finicky about new foods.

I think Grinch liked them the most. He was barely even chewing them! Just snarfing them down. He’s still excited about his day, because every time I so much as walk past his room I can hear him happily snorting away.

Because it’s Squirrel Appreciation Month, I’ll pop in more regularly with cute squirrel nonsense, but also some educational posts. So, if you have burning squirrel questions you’d like to see answered, comment them below!

Every morning — okay, and multiple times throughout the day — I stop what I’m doing to give Tilly some love. Not only does she enjoy flopping around, nibbling my fingers, and being a perfect goober, but it also helps keep and deepen our bond.

For Non-Releasable animals like Tilly, who isn’t entirely there upstairs, this sort of play is important. It makes sure she views me as safe, and keeps handling her safe for both of us.

It’s not really that much “work” where she is concerned. Her brain damage rendered her a very sweet and affectionate girl. She’s a little skittish with people she doesn’t know well, but she knows that I won’t hurt her.

I love this silly kid.

Today is surgery day and we started bright and early… gross! We are not morning people here at the Pipsqueakery. Coffee is always in order on surgery days. 😭

For Ratober day 15, this little guy is named Carnival! I named this weeks surgery animals after pumpkins & squash. Carnival struggled some waking up from his neuter, so he got some extra TLC. Here he is enjoying some glucose after fluids and pain management! 🎃

Let’s take a second to talk about the cost of surgery days! We are not government funded in any way, so any support comes for you, the public! Yesterday, Alex ordered a box of sutures for 1K… and that’s just the sutures. Every aspect of surgery, from the sutures & gloves to the drugs & syringes, cost money. And you help us make it all happen. Thank you for your continued support! 🤗

P.S. enjoy the discussion of dog breeds in the background and my shaky camera work.

We just got in two older boy rats who are, in a word, ANGELS. 😇

They immediately gave so many kisses and even did some bruxing & boggling. Ask other rat people what that means if you don’t know. Anyways, they’ll be getting neutered tomorrow! 🎉

And I can’t think of anything else to write, my brain is broken. Thank you for all your support! 🤗

Hey look! It’s our non traditional Pipsqueak popping in to say hey and reminding you she’s still here! And still needs a home… ☹️

If you don’t remember Mia’s story, I’ve included her before photos so you can see her glow up! I was her finder at the beginning of August so that’s how she ended up as an honorary Pipsqueak. We can’t leave animals in need behind and every animal rescue is in crisis right now, so we took her on since I’m a “dog person”! 💖

I’m going to be honest, she’s A LOT. She is high energy at about 2 years old, and she’s clearly experiencing all of these things for the first time. She needs a home that wants to work with her and has other dogs to show her what to do. Cats are probably a no… she’s got too high of a prey drive. Please email me if you’re interested and feel free to share, share, share! [email protected]

I’ve also added her food to our wishlist again! Thank you for all your support, we know she’s an odd Pipsqueak. 🥹

Time for another 🌙 Pipsqueakery: After Dark 💫

At two in a row, we’re risking becoming the primary purveyor of illicit squirrel pics.

But look. It’s genuinely not my fault.

I can’t help that I turned around and saw this smug lil kiddo gleefully peeing through the bars of his enclosure, onto the floor.

I raise them, but I won’t pretend to control what they do with their bladders once they start to grow up.

Surely that’s someone else’s problem. Right?!

Today we got in this girl who’s in rough shape… ok fine, I’m the one who found her in the middle of the road. It was one of those things where I was really really hoping she was just fine and I could help her safely cross, but nope. 😭

Not only does she have shell damage on her underside, but she’s also missing her front leg. I’ll include the more “icky” pics in our patreon so you’re spared! But honestly, I think she lost her leg a while ago. It’s already starting to heal and have some lovely looking pink healthy skin! 💖

We have had two other turtle intakes this week so far - what is going on turtles, get it together?! Anyways, this girl needs a name, so we’ll take name suggestions! And just a reminder that I’ve added some turtle items to our Amazon wishlist. 🤗

Quick warning: the pictures are gross

I don’t much believe in prescience, but sometimes maybe there’s some force out there watching out. I mean, usually it’s doing the opposite. But sometimes, ever so rarely, things go differently in a good way.

That happened today. I got up earlier than usual, which meant I finished feeding babies their formula earlier than usual. Which was good, because when this kiddo was brought to me, it was very much an emergency. Because I was done with babies, I was able to immediately get her out to the main facility so I could clean her wounds.

There was a further bit of luck because, when I first saw the maggots, I thought for sure this wound was deeper than it turned out to be. I was worried they had already gotten into her body cavity, which makes a bad situation a lot worse. However, the wound isn’t deep.

I don’t know for sure what happened to this baby, and she’s definitely nowhere near out of the woods. But she’s been cleaned up, started on antibiotics, given pain meds, and now has a warm and comfortable place to rest, and hopefully recover.

I’ll be keeping a close eye on her, and she could definitely use some good vibes.

Ratober day 13!

Some would say that 13 is an unlucky number, but I think it might be lucky! That's because this sanctuary rat was *definitely* thinking about biting me here. They decided not to bite, and for that I am thankful!

Some of our sanctuary rats are sanctuary due to behavioral issues. You can never be too sure about anyone in the sanctuary rat enclosure.

While you are here, don't forget to VOTE: https://theanimalrescuesite.com/pages/shelter/the-pipsqueakery-557

P.s. I haven't been posting as much because school is kicking my ass. Send me thoughts of coffee and good sleep! I am never taking two classes with service learning portions at the same time again!
