An Indiana backpack gave Jasper Steinmetz, BS’26, a reason to say hello. What happened next gave fellow Hoosier Sampson James a fresh start.

While walking along a trail in Austin, the recent IU graduate noticed Sampson’s backpack and stopped to talk. He learned that the former Indiana football player had been unhoused for eight months.

Jasper listened. Then, he acted.

A fundraiser he created raised $17,000 and helped Sampson move into an apartment with everything he needed to begin again.

A historic night and one incredible Hoosier. 👑

Justus Kelley, BS’17, MPH’19, was crowned Miss USA 2026 last night, becoming the first mother and married woman to earn the title in the pageant’s 75-year history.

Long before representing Virginia on the national stage, Justus was a student at Indiana University, where she studied community health and public health administration and even represented her alma mater as Miss Indiana University.

Today, she’s a foster mom, senior philanthropic advisor, and founder of Foster Footprints—a nonprofit supporting children in foster care.

Congratulations, Justus! Your IU family is celebrating right along with you. ❤️
