The incredible energy, joy, and sense of community that Asianfest 2026 brought to Bloomington is still fresh in our minds and hearts!

It was amazing to have families, students, and neighbors gather on April 11th at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, as we explored this year’s theme “Mosaic Traditions: Piecing a Common Ground” via cultural performances, videos, and cultural tables.

A heartfelt thank you to partners at IU and Bloomington: , , , and . Your presence encouraged us to explore and learn more from AAPI stories and experiences.

We are so grateful to:

- our performers: , , , , , , .iub . Your infectious energy kept the audience captivated from start to finish!

- the and .iub for your video contributions that shared deeply meaningful perspectives on the AAPI experience.

- student organizations whose creativity kept the visitors engaged and informed: , , and .iu .

As we carry this spirit forward through the rest of AAPI Heritage Month and beyond, Asianfest serves as a powerful reminder: while our personal subjectivities are unique, our shared joy creates an expansive and inclusive common ground.

None of this would have been possible without the vision and tireless spirit of our volunteers, the ACC staff and family, and the Asianfest 2026 Committee. It was a true joy to celebrate their collective efforts at our End-of-the-Year Banquet last week.

Until next Asianfest!

At the heart of the ACC is our founding director Melanie Castillo-Cullather, who after 27.5 years of leadership, is in her own words: “rewiring”. Melanie’s vision and advocacy for students and staff has shaped the ACC. Her legacy of unwavering commitment and care will continue to inspire all of us. 💜

And to our amazing ACC staff who are graduating this year: in case you need a reminder, you are amazing. We are so incredibly proud of you, and wish you the best for what life brings next! For however long you may have been here, your support and presence is what made this little house a home. Thank you! 💜✨

TODAY!

The Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design, in collaboration with the Art Therapy Program at the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art, invites you to a creative gathering of collage-making and conversation in celebration of AAPI Heritage Month. Using simple collage materials, participants will respond to the prompt “Who/What/Where/Why do you come from?” reflecting on background, culture, memory, and legacy.

Through making and small-group dialogue, attendees can share the stories and imagery that shape their experiences while exploring both shared and unique cultural connections.

No artistic experience is necessary. Open to all. Light refreshments will be provided.

Join us along with students from Purdue University, the University of Minnesota, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Illinois Chicago for a thought-provoking virtual discussion of Fetishized by Kaila Yu.

🗓️:  April 9, 2026
⏰: 5:30-7:00 PM
💻: go.uic.edu/FETISHIZED

Kaila Yu (the author) will join us for a Q&A to share insights about her writing and the cultural conversations that inspired the book. The e-book version of this book is available at IUCAT.

In Fetishized, Kaila Yu explores the intersections of race, gender, and media representation through deeply personal reflections on being an Asian American woman in today’s world. A New York Times review praised Yu’s writing as “searingly honest and culturally resonant,” noting that her book “pushes readers to confront uncomfortable truths about the persistence of fetishization and the power of self-narration.”
