🔎 Variety Is the Spice of Civil Society

What kinds of organizations make up the civic landscape? In our latest blog, the OCE Lab explores the wide range of civil society organizations we observe - from service providers and advocacy groups to neighborhood associations, religious congregations, hobby clubs, and professional associations.

This diversity matters. Each type of organization creates different opportunities for participation, leadership, and connection - shaping how civic life unfolds in communities.

🔍 Turning research into action!

At the OCE Lab, we’re not just observing civic life – we’re sharing what we learn with the communities we study. Recently, we began providing participating organizations in Bloomington with customized data reports that highlight both their own patterns and how they fit into the broader civic landscape. These insights help leaders reflect on strengths, spot opportunities, and make decisions grounded in real, local data.

If you’re a Bloomington, Indiana organization interested in participating in this research, or if you’re a participating organization with questions about your data, we’d love to hear from you. You can reach us at:

• Brad Fulton, Lab Co-Director – [email protected]
• Claire Woodward, Program and Lab Manager – [email protected]

Advancing Civic Research Through Partnership with Innovia Foundation

Earlier this year, we announced our expansion into three new regions across the United States, made possible through the generous support of The Trust for Civic Life. One of these new research sites is Kootenai County, Idaho, where we’re partnering with the Innovia Foundation to deepen our understanding of local civic life.

We’re especially grateful to the Innovia Foundation which has served Eastern Washington and North Idaho for more than 50 years. With a mission to ignite generosity and build vibrant, sustainable communities, the foundation continues to strengthen the region through investments in education, health, the arts, and economic development.

Today, our expansion team includes three active Research Assistants who observe 6–12 convenings per week across 27 participating organizations. Their work provides critical data and insights into how civil society organizations operate, connect, and engage their communities.

Together, we’re advancing the understanding of what helps communities flourish.
