American Friends of Finchcocks, Inc. Support and promote Finchcocks Musical Museum, Charity for Musical Education, and Burnett Collection of Early Keyboard Instruments, Kent, England

Finchcocks is an eighteenth-century mansion in Kent, England including gardens and out-buildings. In 1971, it was purchased by Richard and Katrina Burnett to serve as a home for Richard’s growing collection of historical keyboard instruments, and provide a workshop to restore and reproduce harpsichords and early pianos, this in partnership with master instrument builder Derek Adlam. The house was

first opened to the public for visits and concerts in 1976; the first Open Day attracted over 700 people. The Adlam-Burnett workshop ceased its activities in 1982, and the house then became a privately-owned musical museum. Over the years, thousands of music lovers and piano aficionados from around the world visited Finchcocks to listen, study, and perform. in 2016, the museum closed and the house was sold. However, a core collection of instruments, now known as the Richard Burnett Heritage Collection is being maintained in nearby Tunbridge Wells, Kent. It remains an Open Resource, that is, the instruments are accessible for all interested pianists—professionals and amateurs, children and adults—to touch, try out, and play. The Finchcocks Charity for Musical Education (officially The Finchcocks Charity, Limited) was founded in 1984 to raise money to support concerts, recordings, workshops, school visits, and other educational activities around the collection, and to maintain the instruments in pristine condition. The non-for-profit American Friends of Finchcocks, Inc., was established in 2014 to raise awareness of the work of the Finchcocks Charity and the collection in North America, and to enable the many American visitors, past and present, to make charitable donations to the Collection. Our activities include:
• Updates on educational activities.
• Fundraising, with the proceeds going to the Finchcocks Charity.
• Outreach to music schools, conservatories, professional musical societies, festivals, piano builders, and museums.

Richard Burnett, concert pianist who cofounded a museum of historic keyboard instruments – obituary
July 19, 2022 by admin987

Richard Leslie Burnett was born at another manor house in Godstone, Surrey, on June 23 1932. Known to family and friends as Dick, he was the youngest of five children of Colonel Sir Leslie Burnett, Bt, a member of the surveying firm David Burnett and Son, and his wife Joan (née Humphery).

From Eton he studied at the Royal College of Music, served for two years in the Royal Leicestershire Regiment and read Economics and Modern Languages at King’s College, Cambridge. By the early 1960s he was giving recitals at the Wigmore Hall, London, including one in October 1962 in which he vexed the critics by playing Bach on a modern grand piano.

Burnett’s introduction to early music came not long afterwards when, having broken both arms falling down a flight of stairs, he began teaching at a language school in Munich. There he met some pioneers of the early music movement and on his return began not only playing in the style of earlier years but also acquiring the relevant instruments.

Then came the move to Finchcocks, where he also had a fine collection of music-themed art, with many works dating from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Meanwhile, Finchcocks Press published some elegant volumes on the history of the instruments such as Company of Pianos (2004).

In November 2016 the Burnetts sold Finchcocks, which under its new owners remains a centre for music-making. They also sold most of their instruments, although they kept hold of 14, ranging from a 1700 spinet to an 1866 Erard grand piano. At their new home in Tunbridge Wells they continued to host concerts and support music students.

Burnett, who at one stage flirted with Buddhism, was appointed MBE in 2008. He is survived by Katrina (née Hendrey), whom he married in 1969; they had no children.

Richard Burnett, born June 23 1932, died July 8 2022
