You were taught that singing is a talent.

Something you either have or you do not. Science says something completely different.

Singing is not a skill. It is a biological mechanism, one that does something inside you that almost nothing else can.

Much of this comes from Dr. Daisy Fancourt at University College London.

She studied what actually happens inside the body when we sing, not just how it makes us feel, but what changes in the blood and saliva of singers.

Here is what she found.

Singing triggers three different biological systems at the same time. Not one feel-good chemical, but a rare combination most activities cannot produce together.

First, endorphins, your body’s natural painkillers.

Second, oxytocin, the bonding hormone that lowers stress and builds connection.

Third, immunoglobulin A, a frontline part of your immune defense.

Three systems, switched on at once, by your own voice.

And singing is not just loud talking to your brain.

It engages the brain differently than speech, lighting up regions tied to emotion, memory, and reward together. The same words, sung, travel an entirely different path.

Think of your body like a pharmacy.

Most activities unlock one medicine at a time. Singing opens three dispensers at once: pain relief, bonding chemistry, and immune activation. All free, all available any day, no prescription required.

And ancient traditions seemed to know this long before the lab did.

Gregorian monks chanted daily as medicine for mind and body. Sufi devotional singing was seen as a path to healing the heart. Across cultures, healers used the voice as a primary tool.

Here is the shift worth making.

Modern life treats singing as a performance, something for a stage and an audience. But biologically, it is not a performance. It is closer to medicine, and the dose is simply whatever you give it.

And this is the freeing part.

Your voice does not need to be good. Your body responds to the act, not the quality. In the car, the shower, the kitchen alone, biology does not require an audience.

One honest note, because it matters.

Most strong research uses group singing in controlled settings, and solo everyday singing has fewer large studies. But across the board, singing consistently improves mood, lowers cortisol, and activates immune markers.

So here is the practice.

Sing for five minutes today, badly is fine. Sing when stress is rising, the calming chemistry kicks in within minutes. And when you cannot sing, hum, which directly stimulates your vagus nerve.

Use your voice today. Not to impress. Not to perform. Just because your body is built to respond to it.

Your body is full of free tools like this. We decode one every day. Follow us so the next one finds you.

There is something almost magical about singing with other people. And science has uncovered a beautiful reason why.

Research on group singing found that when people sing together, their heart rates begin to synchronize. As the singers breathe in unison through the phrases of a song, their heart rhythms rise and fall together, beating almost as one.

Group singing has also been associated with the release of oxytocin and endorphins, reduced cortisol, improved mood, and a powerful sense of social bonding. Studies have found that people who sing in choirs report higher wellbeing and stronger feelings of belonging.

What makes this so striking is that it happens regardless of musical skill. You do not need a beautiful voice. The benefit comes from the act of joining your breath and voice with others.

This may help explain why communal singing appears in nearly every human culture, in worship, celebration, mourning, and gathering. It is a technology for connection as old as humanity itself.

As a physician interested in the deep roots of health, I find this profound. Connection is one of the strongest predictors of a long, healthy life, and singing together is one of the most joyful paths to it.

You do not need to perform. You just need to join your voice with others.

Where could you find a chance to sing with other people, even informally?
