A Day with Dowland
Friday, June 19, 2026
7:30 PM
Indiana History Center
450 W. Ohio St.
Indianapolis, IN 46202
Nigel North, lute
Jeffrey Thompson, tenor
Joanna Blendulf, viola da gamba
Known for his haunting lute songs and deeply expressive melodies, Dowland captured the spirit of melancholy that defined an era. This intimate concert traces the arc of a single day—from morning matins to midnight—through song, poetry, and the timeless beauty of the Elizabethan lute.
Dowland’s First Booke of Songes (1597), the first publication of art songs with idiomatic accompaniment in Western music, was an immediate success, reprinted often and widely imitated.
Tenor Jeffrey Thompson returns to the U.S. after an illustrious career in France with Les Arts Florissants and other leading ensembles. He is joined by legendary lutenist Nigel North and eminent gambist Joanna Blendulf for a performance of rare intimacy and depth.
(Pre-Concert Chat begins 30 minutes before the concert)
