Bloomington-Posoltega Sister Cities

Bloomington-Posoltega Sister Cities Mission: To promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, & cooperation - one individual, one community at a time.

The Bloomington-Posoltega Committee of Sister Cities International is a non-profit organization that supports projects and programs in Bloomington, Indiana, and our sister city, Posoltega, Nicaragua. Proposed by a group of Bloomington citizens, the Sister City relationship began in 1988 with a Task Force established by then Mayor Tomilea Allison. Participation grew from a few individuals to over 1,000 donors with affiliate support from schools, churches, and service clubs.

Today, members of Bloomington-Posoltega Sister Cities, along with Bloomington's Latino Outreach Coordinator, Ximena Martinez, had the pleasure of recognizing Izzy Sweet and Helena Cutshall as our local sister cities art winners. Izzy and Helena worked together to create "A Hug Around the World," a ceramic vase signifying their vision that friendship can bring peace. Their art is on display in the lobby of City Hall, in the Bloomington Sister Cities' glass case. Please come see their creation and read their message of friendship.

In 1997, a mural inside the Comedor Infantil was drawn and painted by young people of Posoltega and Bloomington working together. The scene continues to prove true to this day, with a volcano on the Posoltega side, and a snowman on the Bloomington side. This month news traveled to Bloomington that the Telica Volcano had small eruptions, and those in Posoltega heard of the cold and snowy weather here in Bloomington. Staying connected and sharing friendship with each other matters. Join us in keeping that friendship strong!

Volunteer committee members will be hosting an info table. Stop by to talk with them, find out more about our sister city relationship with Posoltega, Nicaragua, and discover how you might join us in our work.

A group of Bloomington people recently returned from a trip to our sister city, Posoltega, Nicaragua. After several years of pandemic-related delays, it was wonderful to reunite with our friends in the village. Our time was filled with music, delicious meals, new connections, and working alongside our fellow sister city partners. Our newsletter will be sent out soon. Please read it for more details.
