When asked about her MCLP experience, Angela Rotta ’16 shared that a few years after graduating from IWU (go Titans!), she wanted to get to know the community and local non-profits better. Co-workers at Country Financial suggested that she look into MCLP, and after attending the 2015 graduation, she was inspired to apply for the class of 2016.

Going through the program changed Angela. In her own words. “MCLP taught me about the Bloomington-Normal Community, my own leadership style, and what I value in a leader. Someone who leads the whole person, not just the person at work. They see that people can have ambition and a work ethic outside of the workplace. A leader sees all the facets of a person and genuinely wants them to achieve their goals and ambitions, regardless of whether they are work-related or personal.”

Since completing MCLP in 2016, had a son and chose to take a step back for a few years to raise him. The MCLP program helped her meet people and organizations that she would not have connected with in her personal or professional life. Over the years, Angela has encouraged numerous people to go through the MCLP and connect with the non-profits MCLP supports. These connections have helped her make Bloomington-Normal a home where she proudly raises her family.

Since MCLP, Angela took a new job as the Assistant Director of the Small Business Development Center of McLean County from 2019-2021, received her MBA from ISU (go Redbirds!) in 2021, and is involved with the community again through non-profit work. She is now a Marketing Project Coordinator at State Farm since 2021.

Julie Emig ’18 shares: "I used to think that there were limited ways to be a leader. But MCLP challenged me to see leadership as multifaceted. Because of MCLP, I was motivated to run for Bloomington City Council. The four years in which I served were paramount to my understanding of the complexities that inform civic engagement."

Julie also shares: "During my time on the City Council, I also served for a term as the executive director of MCLP (Multicultural Leadership Program). Then, I was emboldened to become the Executive Director of the McLean County Museum of History. I learned so much, but most importantly, I learned that there are many ways to lead and responsiveness is critical. "

Lacy MacLeod '15 shares: "MCLP taught me how to intentionally invest my talents in my community. I went from a 'do everything' girl, spread thin and not truly understanding the depth of the organizations I was serving, to a strategically involved leader making a real impact. To this day I am much better at saying NO to many opportunities so I can say YES to the best fit for my strengths and purpose. Now my life is full, but not stretched thin, and I feel incredibly satisfied with my choices."

Lacy goes on to share, "It's been 11 years since I graduated from MCLP. My son was born while I was in class, and he is my greatest achievement. In addition, I have kept solid friendships and business relationships with many of my classmates and other MCLP alum. I took a leap in 2020 and left my cushy corporate career to launch Talent Uplifted, a boutique coaching firm dedicated to supporting leaders so they THRIVE at work and therefore in life. That word - intentional - is still incredibly important to me. "

Gina Defa White '12 applied to be a participant in MCLP because she wanted to make new friends after moving to Bloomington, IL. She gained much more.

According to Gina, the Multicultural Leadership Program gave her complete confidence in being herself while learning from the powerful, shared stories of others.

In Gina’s own words, “The biggest thing for me was the inspirational stories that we shared. I was forty-four years old. It was the first time I explained what my life journey had been, because it wasn’t pretty. I learned so much about myself.” That experience of reflection and connection at MCLP inspired her to write her memoir, The Parakeet Drawing.

She describes the program as a unique environment. “Almost like a petri dish.” Where individuals from different backgrounds come together and realize both their shared humanity and the value each person can bring.

Professionally, Gina highlights the program’s strong focus on emotional intelligence and collaborative learning as transformative. The curriculum and group work helped her become more intentional and strategic in her communication and leadership style.

Gina’s impact extended well beyond her time as a participant. She remained involved with MCLP for five additional years as a volunteer, working closely with numerous nonprofit organizations. In that role, she served as a learning consultant and helped train facilitators, continuing to shape the program’s influence on others.

Today, she remains actively engaged in her community through ongoing service on nonprofit boards, carrying forward the same commitment to leadership, connection, and growth that she developed through MCLP.
