Congratulations, Dr. Todd A. Thompson, Ph.D.!

The Indiana Limestone Institute of America was honored to attend the retirement celebration of Dr. Todd A. Thompson, Indiana State Geologist, held Thursday evening at the beautiful One World at Woolery Mill in Bloomington.

After more than 47 years of distinguished service with the Indiana Geological & Water Survey (IGWS)—including 15 years as Director—Todd leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of scientific leadership, public service, education, and stewardship of Indiana's remarkable geologic resources.

One of the evening's highlights was the presentation of the prestigious Circle of Corydon Award, recognizing Todd's lifetime of contributions to the State of Indiana. Established in 2017, the Circle of Corydon is the only state award jointly issued by Indiana's Executive and Legislative branches. State Senator Eric Koch selected Todd as one of his two annual nominees for this distinguished honor and presented the award on behalf of the Indiana General Assembly and Governor Mike Braun.

For those of us in the Indiana limestone industry, Todd has always been much more than Indiana's State Geologist. He has been a valued partner, educator, advocate, and friend whose passion for Indiana's geology has inspired generations of professionals, students, researchers, and citizens.

Indiana's limestone story is inseparable from its geologic story, and few people have done more to advance the understanding and appreciation of that story than Todd. His work has strengthened the scientific foundation that supports the stewardship of Indiana Limestone—The Nation's Building Stone™—and the natural resources that have shaped our state for nearly two centuries.

On behalf of the Indiana Limestone Institute, our members, and the many people whose lives and careers you've touched, thank you, Todd, for your extraordinary service, your friendship, and your unwavering dedication to the State of Indiana.

Congratulations on a remarkable career, and best wishes for a long, healthy, and well-earned retirement. Your legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

A is for Ashlar: Ashlar is one of the finest units of masonry and consists of large, square-cut stones. The C.S. Norton Mansion in Lawrence County (NR-0099) is built entirely of “Royal Blue” Bedford limestone ashlar.

Happy 250th Birthday, America!

As we celebrate our nation's 250th birthday, it's remarkable to reflect on how closely the story of Indiana Limestone parallels the story of America itself.

When our industry was just beginning in south-central Indiana, no one could have imagined that this extraordinary natural stone would become part of so many of North America's most treasured buildings and monuments, earning status as "The Nation's Building Stone".

For generations, quarry workers, carvers, fabricators, architects, engineers, and masons have transformed Indiana Limestone into enduring symbols of faith, education, government, remembrance, and community. Their craftsmanship has left a permanent mark on our built environment.

We are deeply honored that Indiana Limestone has helped tell America's story for nearly 200 years, and we look forward to continuing that tradition for generations to come.
