The Irish Society enjoyed a great day in Saunemin Illinois on Aug 6. We had lunch at Edinger's in Pontiac, then off to Saunemin. At the community center Mayor Bob Bradford welcomed us as well as a large group of folks from the local area. Local historians Al Arnolts and Cheryl O'Donnell spoke on the life of Jenny Hodgers aka Albert Cashier in Saunemin. A tour of Albert's rebuilt home and cemetery finished the day. Thank you Saunemin for preserving an important piece of our central Illinois history.

Annual Irish Road Trip, Monday, August 6, 2018 to Saunemin Illinois.
Twelve miles east of Pontiac. Open to the public. 1:00 Saunemin Community Center.
Learn about the life of Albert Cashier, visit Albert's restored cabin, and visit Albert's final resting place.
Albert Cashier was born Jennie Hodgers Christmas Day 1843 in Clogher Head, County Louth, Ireland. She came to America at age 18 and enlisted as Albert Cashier in the Union Army in 1862. After the war Albert spent his life in Saunemin. Albert was only one of hundreds of women that found their way into service but is, as far as known, the only one who went through the entire war and received a pension while maintaining her secret for forty more years.
