🎙️New podcast episode! iaedp Voices | Episode 8: What Recovery Means Beyond Symptom Reduction

Medical stability and changes in eating behaviors are meaningful markers of progress. But what does recovery actually look like in a person’s relationships, their sense of self, and their ability to move through everyday life? In this episode, host Kyle Woodson, MA, LPC, speaks with Dr. Heather Hower, clinical social worker and researcher.

For practitioners and those with lived experience!
ALIGN33 Media, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit media and education organization focused on eating disorders, body image, mental health, recovery, and access to care, has conducted more than 500 conversations with clinicians, researchers, individuals with lived experience, caregivers, advocates, and families. Across those conversations, they kept hearing many of the same concerns around treatment access, insurance, recovery, family support, and gaps in care.

Because of that, ALIGN33 Media created an anonymous Eating Disorders: Lived Experience Survey to better understand those experiences and help guide future education, advocacy, programming, media, and partnerships.

They are hoping to hear from people with lived experience of an eating disorder, people in recovery, caregivers, parents, and families who have lost a loved one to an eating disorder. They are also asking therapists, registered dietitians, physicians, and other professionals in the field to help by sharing the survey with appropriate patients, clients, families, and professional networks.

This is a community listening and educational initiative, not a formal academic research study or a clinically validated study intended for peer-reviewed publication. Participation is voluntary and anonymous, and responses will not be linked to individual clinicians or treatment providers.

They are also hosting a virtual webinar on October 20 at 1:00 PM ET and 7:00 PM ET to explain the initiative, answer questions, and give clinicians and community members an opportunity to learn more before sharing or participating.

Eating disorders do not discriminate by income, but access to eating disorders treatment often does. The financial cost of specialized care, the time required for intensive treatment, and the geographic concentration of eating disorders services in higher-income areas all create systemic barriers for people living in poverty. On this day, iaedp affirms its commitment to equitable care and to a field that sees every person it serves.

World Food Day centers on global hunger and food access. For eating disorders professionals, it is a meaningful reminder that food insecurity is a significant and underrecognized risk factor in eating disorder development. Poverty, chronic stress, and unstable food access shape eating patterns in ways that can drive disordered eating. An equitable eating disorders field must see the full picture of who is affected and why.

In case you missed it in the newsletter! We are pleased to share some very special news from the iaedp Foundation. The Board of Directors has named Dawn Gannon, MBA, CAE, Chief Executive Officer of the iaedp Foundation. 👏👏👏

Many in our community already know Dawn and have worked with her directly. Since joining iaedp in May 2024, she has worked closely with our Board, team, volunteers, chapters, partners, and members during an important period of change and growth for the Foundation.

Much of Dawn’s work has happened behind the scenes—strengthening our operations and governance, helping restore financial stability, listening to our community, and building the systems we need for the future. Just as importantly, she has remained focused on something that has always been at the heart of iaedp: our people.

“Dawn’s appointment as CEO recognizes the responsibility she has already taken on and the leadership she continues to bring to this work,” said Eva Trujillo Chi Vacuán, MD, MET, FAED, CEDS, FAAP, F.iaedp, President of the iaedp Foundation. “We can grow and change while still honoring the people and relationships that built this community over more than forty years.”

As Dawn begins this next chapter with iaedp, she will continue working alongside our Board, team, and community to build a Foundation that is strong, welcoming, responsive, and prepared for the future. Please join us in congratulating Dawn on her new role as CEO.

NEXT WEEK: iaedp CE Foundation Webinar: How to Start Your Own Practice - 21 October

Starting an eating disorder practice can be one of the most rewarding—and daunting—decisions for mental health and medical professionals. This webinar is designed to demystify the process by equipping participants with practical knowledge, tools, and frameworks to navigate the early stages of establishing an independent practice. Whether exploring private practice for the first time or transitioning from an institutional setting, attendees will gain clarity on how to align clinical and business priorities to build a sustainable practice. The session introduces foundational business concepts, including practice structure, competitive positioning, and long-term planning, alongside key clinical considerations. Particular attention will be given to the importance of clearly defining and communicating your clinical approach, not only to enhance patient care but also to establish credibility and coordination within the broader eating disorder treatment system. Participants will gain a clear understanding of common mistakes, areas of risk, and strategies for success through the lens of a mission-driven, patient-centered practice.
