The Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies at Indiana University is now accepting applications for our annual Herman C. Hudson Symposium from March 7-8, 2025.

Our focus this year is on the relationships between Blackness and the land. We are seeking applications from academics, farmers, land activists, policy enthusiasts, and community members.

Please feel free to submit topics related to: farming, agriculture, food production, environmental racism, gentrification, redlining, redistricting, 21st century African reparation, displacement, neocolonialism, land ownership, migration, and any other topic that highlights the relationship between Black people, land, and their viability. The submission deadline is Tuesday December 31, 2024.

Shayla Lawson is the author of A SPEED EDUCATION IN HUMAN BEING, PANTONE, I THINK I’M READY TO SEE FRANK OCEAN, THIS IS MAJOR: NOTES ON DIANA ROSS, DARK GIRLS & BEING DOPE (Harper Perennial, 2020) and HOW TO LIVE FREE IN A DANGEROUS WORLD: A DECOLONIAL MEMOIR (Tiny Reparations, 2024). They have written for Bustle, Romper, Salon, Tin House, PAPER, ESPN, Salon, Guernica, Vulture, The Cut and New York Magazine, been awarded fellowships from Yaddo and the MacDowell Artist Colony, and a nonfiction finalist for the National Book Critics’ Circle and LAMBDA Literary Award. They’re from Lexington, Kentucky but they’ve lived everywhere.

Tomorrow we kick off this year's Herman C. Hudson Symposium, a celebration of Black art and Black Studies.

We are especially excited for our Keynote Speaker, Shayla Lawson, to come and share their work. Books will be available for sale on Friday, March 29.
