“At this point in time ,a moratorium is necessary, so our town can establish the guardrails necessary to protect our water, to protect our energy, to protect ratepayers from the impacts of these data centers,” said Ryan Herron, member of Illinois People’s Action.

Bloomington City Council members were united Monday night in support of a six-month moratorium on data centers, saying concerns over water, energy and other impacts to the community needed to be understood before “hyperscale” centers could be allowed.

"While ADM profits, Decatur risks becoming ground zero for potential water contamination, induced seismicity (earthquakes) and long-term environmental damage. Illinois People’s Action, of which I am a member, correctly opposes the project because the risks of CO2 sequestration far outweigh the rewards. We risk making a single company wealthier at the expense of the health and safety of our people and our water."

ADM's vision of Decatur as a regional "hub" for waste CO2 should send shivers down our spines. While ADM officials tout economic benefits (H&R, Sept. 19, 2025), we must question
