Hands in Autism

Hands in Autism Offers disability & ASD training, resources, & services to individuals, caregivers, providers, & more

Mission

Mission: To provide unique learning opportunities designed to improve understanding of the process and ability of working with individuals with ASD and a range of other developmental and behavioral challenges through hands-on and coaching experiences and building bridges of information, resources and collaboration across family, educational, medical and community systems. Vision: To build

local capacity statewide through continuous learning and demonstration of effective implementation of (1) evidence-based practices in supporting individuals with ASD and other neurodevelopmental and behavioral disorders across home, school, medical and other community settings and (2) regional community networks composed of same stakeholders bridging across systems and settings with a focus on shared responsibility for positive individual and family outcomes. Program Description
Training:
The Center provides innovative, research-based, and practical training and technical support to school staff, medical and service providers, primary caregivers, and individuals on the autism spectrum within Indiana and globally based on the HANDS training model. This model is founded on the belief that training should focus on: individual strengths; comprehensive training; data driven decision making; blended evidence-based intervention strategies; and hands-on practice, coaching and mentoring with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder as well as a range of other individuals with diverse strengths and challenges in their natural settings. HANDS offers complementary resources and negotiates a range of service contracts to suit consumer needs. Service:
The Center provides customizable live and online trainings, interactive workshops, onsite coaching and consultations, and intensive hands-on trainings for school personnel, health care providers, families, therapists and other caregivers. Much training occurs in or is presented from work within natural settings, lending emphasis to practical use with increased feasibility, support of effective implementation or transfer of learning, and improved building of local capacity. Additionally, self-paced tutorials, webcasts, and podcasts, as well as a number of downloadable materials (from informational handouts to templates to manuals) are available online, many free of charge. Community:
The HANDS in Autism ® Center also focuses on identifying and meeting specific community needs as well as fostering: collaboration and networking across medical, school, family, and community settings; reciprocal sharing of information within and across communities; increased dissemination and awareness of resources and information; and increased training opportunities within, relevant to, and informed by the specific community. Since 2010 and in an effort to expand and enrich awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Indiana as well as to expand on community collaborations, HANDS in Autism® initiated and continues to facilitate Local Community Cadres (LCCs). These cadres bring together interested individuals representing school, medical and family/community systems and perspectives to take action in meeting local community needs of individuals with autism spectrum or related disorders, families, and the entire community.

When teams invest in learning, communities rise.

It’s been inspiring to see LOGAN Center’s Community Employment and Life Enrichment teams investing in deeper learning around Employment First practices. Their commitment to growth strengthens opportunities for the individuals they serve — and we’re grateful to be part of that journey.

If your team is also looking to build stronger transition and vocational supports, there’s another chance to join us this Fall.

Are you interested in a unique and exciting experience for your child this summer? HANDS in Autism® is looking for 3-4 students per training week with autism and/or with social, communication, sensory, and/or behavior sensitivities who are between the ages of 10-14 to be a part of our week-long intensive summer training in Bloomington, Indiana. Children are able to participate as campers within the HANDS model classroom, engaging in academic as well as art, cooking, and leisure activities. Through the participation of such campers, educational and community participants are able to directly see, understand, and implement the practices they are learning alongside trainers and with direct student involvement.

Parents benefit from their child’s participation as they will receive materials used during the training and additional feedback or tips from the HANDS trainers regarding strategies and activities that worked most effectively for their child.

Dates:
June 22-26, 10a-3p ET
July 20-24, 10a-3p ET

If you are interested in your child being considered for this training or would like any further information, please contact Kristan, [email protected].

🌐🫱🏻‍🫲🏽♾️ When partners come together, the impact reaches farther!

💙 Grateful for the opportunity to partner with IN*SOURCE, Indiana’s Parent Training Center, to share more about the statewide work happening through HANDS in Autism® and the collaborative efforts shaping Autism services across Indiana.

Today’s conversation highlighted the strength of bringing families, educators, providers, agencies, and community leaders together to expand access, strengthen supports, and ensure every voice has a place in shaping meaningful progress. A key focus was the Indiana Interagency Autism Coordinating Council - IIACC — a statewide forum where partners unite to identify priorities, elevate lived experience, and guide coordinated action for individuals and families.

When we gather at the same table, we build a stronger, more connected Indiana.

When we listen deeply, we move forward together.

And when we collaborate, we create real change.

Thank you to INSOURCE for opening the door to this dialogue and to all who continue to champion informed, responsive, and community‑driven Autism services statewide. 💙
