Juneteenth, officially Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday in the United States. It is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday's name, first used in the 1890s, is a portmanteau of June and nineteenth, referring to June 19, 1865, the day when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War. The holiday is considered the "longest-running African-American holiday" and has been called "America's second Independence Day." The historical legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times.

Today, on Women Veteran’s Day, we honor the courageous women who have served our nation with strength, dedication, and unwavering patriotism. This day commemorates the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948, a historic milestone that paved the way for women to serve as permanent members of the U.S. Armed Forces. To the women veterans of DAR and across our nation: thank you for your service, sacrifice, and enduring commitment to our country. Your legacy continues to inspire future generations.

DAR is proud to support women veterans through outreach, volunteerism, and partnerships. Our recent concert, DAR Celebrates America 250! A Salute to Women Veterans, highlighted the vital work of the Military Women’s Memorial, and recognized recipients of this year’s DAR Vivian’s Outreach for Women Grants (VOW). The DAR is proud that more than $400,000 were awarded to 10 organizations dedicated to supporting homeless and indigent women who have served our country.
