Midwest Builders Exchange MBEX is where commercial construction professionals across the Upper Midwest come to move their business forward. Yup, it's all included with membership!

The real work of construction doesn’t happen in isolation; it happens between people. We’re not just a plan room; we’re a connection point. The Minnesota Builders Exchange (MBEX) is a progressive, non-profit trade association providing our members with construction project leads, bidding documents and opportunities to network within the construction industry. Since 1888, our mission has been simple: to assist our member companies and their employees with efficiency, professionalism, and top tier work. Our staff of reporters research and provide project leads and construction bidding documents on over 5,000 projects annually. Our members access construction projects from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin via our Online and Physical Plan Rooms.

Thursday's Plan Room Demo is free, virtual, and over by 10:00am. Here are three tricks you'll walk away knowing:

1.) How to Set Up Search Filters That Pinpoint the Right Projects 📍
Keywords, key phrases, product names, and CSI (division) codes. Put them together inside a search filter and the Plan Room does the work. Less scrolling through irrelevant projects, more time on the ones that actually fit your trade / specialty.

2.) How to Get Your Company on a Project's Bidder List 📋
It's a very straightforward process once you know where to look, and doing it right means the right people know you're interested in the project before the bidding window closes.

3.) How to Track Projects Without Missing a Beat 📧
New addenda. Phase changes. Reported apparent lows. You can have these updates hit your inbox automatically as they happen, or check on your own if your inbox is already at maximum capacity. Either way, we'll walk through both so project updates don't slip by unnoticed.

The MBEX Young Professionals Network is on October 28 at Frattalone Construction attalone Construction in Little Canada. A casual, in-person event built for construction professionals 40 and under.

Having almost 140 years in commercial construction under one's belt teaches you a few things.

If we narrowed the MANY key lessons down to only 10 that every young professional starting out in this industry needed to know, here's where we'd start:

1.) Learn to read the documents. Seriously.
Construction documents tell you everything about what's expected before a single nail is hammered in. The people who understand them early don't just keep up; they get ahead.

2.) Your reputation moves faster than you do.
Construction is a smaller world than it appears from the outside. How you handle a tough job, a difficult conversation, or a bad week...people remember. Build, and act, accordingly.

3.) Get on job sites whenever you can.
There's a version of this industry you can only learn by being on an active site. No amount of coursework or screen time will get you fully there. Show up, watch, and ask what you're looking at.

4.) Ask the obvious questions.
Everyone in that room was once new. The ones who figured things out fastest weren't the ones who already knew everything; they were the ones willing to ask. Most, if not all, folks are happy and willing to share their experiences.

5.) Build your network before you need it.
The relationships that tend to matter most are the one made when nothing was riding on them. Start now, even if (especially if) you don't have a reason to yet.

It's October 1; do you know what that means? 👀

New members who join before the end of the year get the remainder of 2026 PLUS all of 2027 at today's rates. Join this month and you're looking at 15 months for the price of 12. Wait until November, that's 14. December still works out in your favor.

So what does that time actually get you?

🖥️ The MBEX Online Plan Room is where most members spend the bulk of their time: tracking projects, building search filters, getting eyes on nearly 5,000 commercial construction opportunities published annually across the Upper Midwest. Think about a construction project that didn't go as planned 🫣

Somewhere along the way, there was probably a breakdown in communication, and with it, trust.

Now think about one that went well. Chances are, the difference came down to the relationships behind it.

The construction industry runs on people. Always has. The partnerships built between contractors, trade partners, project owners, and architects are what turn plans into finished projects. (Some might even say it's what separates a smooth job from one riddled with change orders, costs overruns, and disputes 😉)

Strong relationships don't happen by accident. They're built intentionally, over time, through consistent communication, shared accountability, and showing up for those you work with.

Duluth's construction community enjoyed a fantastic day at Old Vermilion Trail Hunting Preserve last Thursday (September 9) for MBEX's annual Sporting Clays North event.

More than 70 of MBEX's members gathered in superb late summer weather, with the day's biggest challenge being the wind (but hey, it only added to the excitement).

Attendees enjoyed the new format. Instead of a single afternoon shoot of 50 clays, they enjoyed a full day across two courses with 100 targets throughout. After the first course in the morning, shooters took a break to enjoy a BBQ lunch prepared by Paul Zwak, then headed back out for the second course. The day's action wrapped up with a casual happy hour, and a short program where individual high scorers and door prize giveaways / raffles were awarded.
