Bloomingdale Historical Society (BHS) preserves and presents the history of Bloomingdale, Illinois. BHS works with the Bloomingdale Public Library to save historical documents and oral histories of current and former Village residents. BHS saves and preserves historic artifacts in a safe, accessible location for all residents to enjoy. Bloomingdale is one of the earliest villages settled in what i

s now DuPage County. The Meacham family settled here in 1833, and by the end of the following year, 12-15 families had settled in the locality. The community was served by the Chicago-Galena Highway, modern day Lake Street. It became an important stop for stage coaches and westward travelers. Originally a Cook County settlement, it was annexed by DuPage in 1839, and incorporated as a village later that year. The northern part of the village wanted to develop commercially while the southern part wished to remain a farming community. In 1922, the village split to accommodate this—the northern portion of the town was incorporated as Roselle. The Bloomingdale Historical Society published a book on the history of Bloomingdale, "Images of America - Bloomingdale", as told through photographs and captions. Books are available for purchase at the Village Hall, Library, and Chamber Office for 19.99, with all proceeds going to the Bloomingdale Historical Society.

The sounding of the bugle for taps, do you know the story? It started during the Civil War when Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe heard moans of a soldier wounded and risked his own life to bring the man back to camp not knowing if he was a Union or Confederate . When he got back dragging the wounded soldier he discovered it was his own son who had enlisted in the Confederate Army unknown to him. When his son died he asked for permission to give him a full military burial. The request was granted partially, he could not have a full military band only one musician. Captain Ellicombe chose a bugler and asked him to play a series of notes that he had found scribbled on a piece of paper inside of his dead son's uniform. The haunting melody that was played that day is what we know today as Taps.

Since 1879 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has been creating topographic maps of the United States. These maps show land features such as elevations, lakes, rivers, and streams. Additionally, they show man-made features such as roads, railroads and buildings. The little black dots on the map represent buildings. Looking at these maps through the years can add historical insights.

This map from 1908 is the oldest “topo” map that includes Bloomingdale we’ve found. We’ve added road labels to help orient viewers. We’ve also highlighted three interesting observations from this map.

1. Nordic Road that now ends at Swift Road once ran through what is now Medinah Country Club (founded in 1924 by the Medinah Shriners) and connected to Lake Street.

2. Glen Ellyn Road originally had a 90-degree bend which later was changed to curve.

3. Lake Street was known as the “Chicago And Elgin Road” according to this map

Can you find any other observations?

The White Table is set in remembrance of those who are casualties of war, prisoners and those still missing. The white tablecloth to symbolize the purity which they served, table small with setting for one reflecting vulnerablity of one prisoner against his enemy. Single rose to symbolize the blood shed, the families/loved ones left behind. A slice of lemon placed on bread plate as reminder of the bitter fate of the prisoner, accompanied by salt to symbolize tears shed by families waiting for their return. The glass is inverted to remind us this person is not with us tonight. The candle is lite to represent the light in our hearts the hope our comrades will find their way home. The chair is placed at the table and remains empty because they are not with us.
