PASTOR DON’S THOUGHT OF THE DAY

This morning, like every Wednesday from 7 to 8, a faithful handful of us gathered in the Fellowship Hall of the church. There's something sacred about that early hour—coffee still steaming, the day not yet demanding, hearts a little more open before the noise sets in. I was asked to bring the lesson, and the question I carried in with me was one I think we all carry, whether we say it out loud or not: How do we know when?

How do we know when it's time to speak—or time to stay silent? When to step forward in faith—or wait a little longer? When the door in front of us is God's open invitation, or just our own restlessness pushing on a wall?

I don't think any of us has a formula. And honestly, I've come to believe that's the point. Because the more I sit with this question, the more I realize that knowing "when" was never meant to be something we figure out on our own. It was meant to keep us close to the One who already knows.

Scripture is full of people who wrestled with this. Some, like the disciples after the resurrection, were simply told to wait—to "not leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father." Waiting wasn't wasted time; it was preparation. Sometimes knowing "when" isn't about a sign in the sky—it's about recognizing where God has already placed you.

Here's what struck me most this morning as we talked it through together: the people God used rarely had certainty. They had trust. They leaned in. They prayed. They listened. And then they took the next faithful step, even when the whole staircase wasn't lit.

So maybe the better question isn't "How do I know when?" but "Am I staying close enough to hear?" The psalmist gives us the promise we lean on: "I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you." That's not a map handed over at the start. That's a Companion walking beside us the whole way.

This week, if you find yourself stuck at one of life's crossroads, take a breath. You don't have to have it all figured out. You just have to keep close to the One who does—and take the next step when He says, "Now."

Be blessed as you are a blessing to me.

PASTOR DON’S THOUGHT OF THE DAY

Every parent treasures the memory of a child's first steps—the unsteady wobble, the outstretched arms, the inevitable tumble onto the floor, and then the determined push back up to try once more. No loving parent scolds a toddler for falling. We cheer every attempt, knowing that the stumbles are not failures but the very process by which walking is learned. Clumsiness is simply what growth looks like at the beginning.

Our Heavenly Father extends us that same grace. Paul wrote, "When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways" (1 Corinthians 13:11, NRSV). Maturity arrives gradually, through countless small steps, and yes, through many falls along the way. God does not expect a newborn faith to run a marathon.

So, when you stumble—when old habits resurface or your faith feels shaky—do not let discouragement convince you that you've failed. The fall is part of the learning. Reach up for the hand that is already extended toward you, rise, and take the next step. The God who began this good work in you delights in every effort, and He is committed to seeing you grow up into the full stature of Christ.

Be blessed as you are a blessing to me.
