📚 September is National Literacy Month! 📚

Literacy is more than the ability to read a book. It helps people understand medical information, complete job applications, manage finances, use technology, support their children’s education, and participate fully in their communities.

Current statistics show why literacy support remains so important:
• In 2023, 28% of U.S. adults ages 16–65 performed at or below Level 1 in literacy—an increase from 19% in 2017. Adults at these levels may have difficulty understanding longer or more complex written information.

• In 2024, 40% of fourth-grade students and 33% of eighth-grade students performed below the NAEP Basic level in reading.

• Worldwide, at least 739 million adults still cannot read and write, and approximately two-thirds of them are women.

This month, we encourage everyone to recognize that literacy affects people of every age. Whether you read with a child, donate books, volunteer, share information about local resources, or encourage someone who is building their skills, you can help create a stronger and more literate community.

The Greene County Literacy Coalition provides free, confidential literacy support to adults in our community. Asking for help takes courage, and it is never too late to learn.

Linton now has a new Little Free Library available for everyone to use! 🥳

The newest addition is located at the Goose Pond Fish & Wildlife Visitors Center, right outside the door. If you find yourself visiting Goose Pond, be sure to stop by, take a book, or leave one to share with others. 📘

A special thank you to our board members, Mike Pate and Johnny Smith, for being instrumental in constructing and launching this Little Free Library. And thank you to Kalli Dunn from Goose Pond, for helping coordinate this new addition!

And a huge thank you to the Greene County Foundation for funding this Little Free Library! Their generosity helps support literacy, learning, and community connection across the county.

Come see us today at the Linton Farmers Market in Humphrey’s Park! We’re handing out free books and stickers until noon!

And then we’re headed to the Goose Pond Visitor’s Center to install a new Little Free Library at 1:30. Come say hello and grab some free books! 🙂📚

Owensburg now has a new Little Free Library available for everyone to use! 🥳

The newest addition is located at the Owensburg Fire Department and Town Hall building, right outside the door by the vending machine. If you find yourself visiting Owensburg, be sure to stop by, take a book, or leave one to share with others. 📘

A special thank you to Rich Tarr, and this group of Eastern Greene HS students, for being instrumental in constructing and launching this Little Free Library. And thank you to our board president, Martha Marmouze, for coordinating it all!
