The Blissfield Area Lions Club provided one of the stops at this year's Wassail Festival in downtown Blissfield on December 12. Thanks to Barrett and Ewelina Dvorsky for allowing us to stage our Apple Whiskey Wassail in their storefront. We appreciated the cookies donated by Cindy Dvorsky to accompany our tasty drink. This evening event, along with the MIss River Raisin Scholarship Program's Hot Cha-Cha 5K, brought in many revelers to celebrate the Christmas season. Pictured are Lions Madison Masters, Ethan Masters, and Alysia Masters who served the holiday items throughout the evening.

On our November 5 meeting, Liz Seeburger provided details of the work of the Blissfield Food Pantry. We learned about the process of securing food, as well as items that are needed to provide support for area families. We were pleased to provide $500 to the food pantry to meet those needs. Please consider supporting local food pantries in your communities during this Thanksgiving season.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Community Service Commission announced that John Richard (Dick) Saxton of Blissfield as one of 13 individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations who will be honored at the 2025 Governor’s Service Awards for their commitment to volunteerism, service or philanthropy. The ceremony will take place on November 12 at the Kellogg Center in East Lansing. Dick will be honored with the award for Older Adult Volunteer of the Year.

Dick Saxton has been serving his community for decades. It is quite impressive that at the age of 85 he has not wavered in his commitment to making a difference.

He currently volunteers with the Lenawee Department on Aging by driving other older adults to non-emergency medical appointments and delivering meals to homebound older adults from a local senior center.

Dick served with the U.S. Army, including 15 years overseas and currently serves on the advisory committee of the Lenawee County Department of Veterans Affairs. Dick transports veterans to their medical appointments at the VA Ann Arbor Medical Center.

His commitment to his community does not stop with seniors, though. Through the Blissfield Area Lions Club, Dick has helped support in the past three decades many service projects, including helping to provide glucometer test kits to local doctors, collecting donations and purchasing school supplies for local students, and coordinating trips for children to attend a symphony event, and participates in vision screening annually at Blissfield Elementary School.

Please join us in recognizing Dick for his demonstration of service to others. We are proud of our fellow Lion as he receives this honor.

The Blissfield Area Lions Club participated in the Harvest Festival on October 7. We teamed with Rich Lanes to bring Pumpkin Bowling to area youth. The Harvest Fest is scheduled as part of the monthly First Thursday events organized by the Blissfield DDA. Throughout the downtown area, there were free games and events for children and their families. Pictured are Stan Masters, Shellie LaTour, and Dick Saxton. Thanks to Shellie and Brian LaTour for allowing us to serve in our community during this event.

The Blissfield Area Lions Club spent the
morning at Blissfield Elementary School on September 17 to place a pocket-sized Constitution into the hands of fifth-grade students to celebrate Constitution
Day. Lions Bob Ford and Adam DuMoulin presented a “pre-reading” lesson using the sections of the booklet to model a useful strategy for accessing informational text, which is associated with increased reading comprehension.

The pocket Constitutions placed in the hands of the fifth-grade students
includes flash cards, an index of topics, and a copy of the Declaration of
Independence. The club has distributed the pocket booklets for nearly two decades. Thanks to Blissfield Elementary for their support of this annual project.

The Blissfield Area Lions Club is joining the excitement at Blissfield Middle School this fall as a supporter of the therapy dog initiative. Laura Denkins and Jolene Bills presented their project objectives and timeline to the club at our September 3 meeting.

Our club has a history of supporting the training and use of support dogs to meet the needs of youth and adults. Some of our members and former members have trained puppies for providing services for adults with physical needs. We provide financial resources to Leader Dogs for the Blind, an organization in Rochester, Michigan. We also provided funds for a local family needing a support dog for a child with diabetes.

The Lions donated a check for $1000 to the middle school to assist in reaching their goal of providing a trained dog in the school building this fall. We expect to continue to partner with the school in the future as the initiative grows from initial implementation to full implementation. We share in their excitement at providing social-emotional and mental health services for the youth in our community.
